This provision is good
Children are very happy and form strong bonds with the childminder. They are welcomed with warmth and affection and settle quickly when they arrive. The childminder provides resources, activities and local outings that excite and motivate children to learn. Children develop a positive attitude towards their learning. They are confident and interested to explore, and make good progress from their starting points. The childminder has a good understanding of how to safeguard the children in her care and support their good health. Children develop a good understanding of how to keep themselves safe. The childminder has a positive attitude towards improving her teaching and practice, and takes appropriate training to help her to do this. She has met all recommendations from the last inspection. She has a good understanding of how children learn.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder sometimes misses opportunities to strengthen children's understanding of diversity, to develop an awareness of people's differences. At times, there are missed chances to develop and extend children's early literacy and mathematics skills to help them learn to recognise familiar letters and numerals.
p.1
What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:
p.2
What the setting needs to do to improve further
strengthen opportunities to enable children to develop further an understanding of people's differences, and different ways of life make the most of all opportunities to extend children's early literacy and mathematics skills.
p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector observed activities and interactions between the childminder and the children. The inspector looked at information about children's attendance and development. The inspector carried out a joint observation with the childminder. The inspector discussed the childminder's evaluation, assessment and planning methods and her range of policies and procedures. The inspector checked evidence of the childminder's qualifications, and the records of suitability checks for adults living on the premises.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The experienced childminder is committed to the continuous improvement of her practice. For example, she regularly exchanges ideas with other childminders and completes research to keep abreast of any changes that will benefit children's outcomes. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of how to protect children in her care and who to contact should she have any concerns about a child's welfare. She diligently identifies any risks to children in her setting, and on outings in the community. The childminder completes detailed observations, and checks children's learning to help identify any gaps in their progress. She has very good working relationships with parents and with other settings children attend to help support continuity in their learning. Parents are very complimentary about the care and learning that she provides.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder knows each child well and creates exciting learning opportunities that engage and inspire all the children. For example, children play in a pretend rocket and go into space. The childminder's interactions are skilful and purposeful as she helps to develop children's thinking and new vocabulary, concepts and skills through her supportive play. For example, when she retells a favourite story with small props she encourages children to talk and use early reading skills, and when playing with a collection of teddy bears, she encourages mathematics skills to count, estimate and compare.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Children are confident and secure in this nurturing, homely environment. The childminder works closely with parents to settle new children and fully discusses children's needs and interests, understanding that each child is unique and special. Children learn to treat others with kindness and respect. The childminder provides clear house rules and outdoor play rules, including washing hands when children return inside. Children learn about healthy lifestyles; they play outdoors and go for walks in all weathers. They have ample opportunity to develop their physical skills and learn about the benefits of exercise. Children follow good hygiene practices and enjoy healthy snacks.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children make good progress and are well prepared for the next stage in their learning and their eventual move to school. Children learn about mathematical concepts, including simple calculations, and learn to write as they make an outline of their body and decorate it. Children become confident communicators as they talk together, ask questions and express their own ideas. They become independent as they help tidy away toys and resources, go to the toilet on their own, and learn to put on their own shoes.
