This provision is good

 Children engage in stimulating activities that sustain their interest. The childminder organises activities that provide challenging experiences, appropriate to children's developmental age. Children make good progress.  The childminder challenges discrimination. Children feel safe and secure in their surroundings. They have equal opportunities to succeed. The childminder fully supports children's individual needs.  Following training, the childminder implements effective safety measures, such as ensuring that children remain safe when using the internet.  Activities fully support children's communication and language skills. For example, the childminder uses effective questioning and gives good explanations during activities.  The childminder is warm and caring. Children form positive relationships and enjoy their time with her.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder occasionally misses opportunities to develop younger children's awareness of time during activities.  The childminder has not fully established links with other settings children attend, to enable her to build on what children learn there.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 provide more opportunities for children to develop their understanding of time and how to measure short periods of time as they play  improve the sharing of information with other settings children attend to build on what children learn elsewhere.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector viewed written statements from parents about the quality of the provision.  The inspector checked the childminder's qualifications and records of suitability checks to work with children.  The inspector observed interactions between the children and the childminder.  The inspector spoke to the childminder and children at appropriate times during the day.  The inspector looked at a range of documentation including children's assessments, policies, and the childminder's professional development.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder implements her effective safeguarding policies well and has a very good understanding of the welfare requirements to keep children safe from harm. She undertakes detailed risk assessments prior to outings to ensure there are no hazards to children. The childminder monitors children's progress well to ensure they are ready to move forward to their next stage of learning, including school. For example, she encourages children to develop their early writing skills through a broad range of activities. The childminder attends training wherever possible, to keep up to date with recent legislation and to improve her provision for children.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder observes children's learning regularly to enable her to provide activities that interest and motivate them. Children concentrate for long periods on activities of their choosing, such as making pizza with dough and adding different toppings. The childminder provides good opportunities to support children's language skills. For example, they talk about their cars going 'faster' and 'further' and guess the characters in the story, following the childminder's clues. The childminder obtains good information from parents to establish children's starting points, to help her plan activities as soon as they start. The childminder supports children's confidence well through praise and by planning challenging yet achievable activities, such as making faces on paper plates.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder helps children to manage their feelings by talking to them about behaviour and the effects that it has on others. Children are beginning to understand how to resolve minor conflicts positively. Children develop good independence skills and manage their own personal needs well. They choose and use tools competently, such as when playing with dough. The childminder teaches them to share and play cooperatively. The childminder works well with parents to support children's emotional well-being. For example, those in military families text the childminder to alert her that their helicopter will fly over the house, so children can wave to them. Children learn how their bodies work when eating and drinking and have frequent opportunities to explore the outdoors, encouraging physical development and an awareness of healthy lifestyles.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress. They learn about the natural world. For example, they grow sunflowers and search for minibeasts in the garden. Children develop their senses, such as by exploring different scented playdough. They learn useful skills, including how to cross the road safely, looking for the 'green man' at the crossing.
