This provision is good

 Children have nurturing relationships with the childminder and they feel secure in the homely environment. The childminder is a good role model and children learn from her positive example.  The childminder responds clearly to children's questions, extending their learning during activities, helping them to develop their communication and language. Children make good progress in all areas of their learning.  The childminder plans exciting activities, which inspires children's curiosity and keeps them motivated.  The childminder is committed to improving her practice and attends training when possible. She keeps updated on recent legislation and development requirements to progress children in their learning.  Children have good opportunities to access the outdoors to promote their physical well- being and health.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder sometimes misses opportunities to extend children's early reading skills.  Partnerships with local schools and other settings are not fully established to help build upon the good progress children have already made.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 provide more opportunities to extend children's early reading skills further  develop better links with other settings and schools to build on what children learn elsewhere.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed interactions between the children and the childminder.  The inspector held discussions with the children and the childminder during appropriate times of the day.  The inspector looked at a range of documentation, including safeguarding policies and children's assessments.  The inspector gained the views of parents through written statements.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a strong understanding of the welfare requirements and the procedures to take if she has a concern about a child. The childminder reflects on her practice through self-evaluation, which has led to her improving her planning. Planning now focuses more on child-led activities to keep children consistently engaged. The childminder attends regular training and uses this to enhance her provision. For example, following training, the childminder has introduced new musical activities and mathematical games to help children to develop an awareness of sounds and practise counting outside. Parents contribute to children's progress; for example, video links help track children's identification of colours. The childminder monitors children's progress well, helping them to move forward onto the next stage of their learning.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder provides many learning opportunities for children as they play. She extends activities well. For example, children learn how to make an owl's nest using natural resources they have collected from the woods. The childminder is enthusiastic and supports children's mathematical development well. For example, she encourages children to look at the patterns in ice. Children practise writing their names with brushes and water, developing letter recognition in preparation for school. The childminder uses observations to plan for children's next steps following their interests. She encourages children's sensory experiences through activities, such as exploring textured bags containing hair gel and small figures.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder teaches children about safety as they cut their fruit. They develop an understanding of healthy lifestyles, such as by growing their own runner beans in the garden. Children are happy, confident learners who have developed close relationships with the childminder. This has a positive effect on children's emotional well-being. Children attend regular outings to the farm or local aquarium where they learn about the natural world. Children choose resources independently and the childminder encourages them to do things for themselves, such as getting dressed, in preparation for school.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

All children make good progress in their development and are ready for the next stage in their learning. They learn about lifecycles as they watch caterpillars change into butterflies and enjoy learning about the world around them by celebrating events, such as the Queen's birthday. Children's behaviour is good. They enjoy carrying out small tasks, such as finding toys for babies or carrying buckets of water for their friends.
