Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Requires improvement Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder does not always maintain the very highest of hygiene standards when changing nappies.  The childminder does not consistently use her observations and assessments to plan for each child's future learning, to ensure that they make good progress.  The childminder does not gain enough information from parents when children first start attending and on an ongoing basis, about what their child already knows and can do. This means she is not able to plan as accurately as possible for children's learning.  The childminder's evaluation of the effectiveness of her provision and planning for improvements is in the early stages of being implemented. However, the evaluation does not include the views of parents to ensure it is fully comprehensive.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 The childminder has completed all necessary paperwork and training since her last inspection. She has updated herself on changes to government guidelines and sought help from the local authority development worker, to improve her assessments of children's progress.  Children enjoy the homely atmosphere. They are confident to express their needs and show good levels of concentration and curiosity in activities. This is because the childminder promotes their communication and language skills well, and taps into their interests with the activities she provides.  Children develop strong emotional bonds with the childminder, who is warm and caring. She supports children to try new activities and learning experiences. Their need for comfort, rest and refreshment, as well as play is addressed.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage and the Childcare Register the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

 provide suitable, hygienic facilities for changing any children who are in nappies 30/06/2016

p.2

Due Date

 ensure information gained from observations and assessments of children's progress are consistently used to plan for their future learning, to help all children make good progress. 31/07/2016

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 obtain more information from parents about what children already know and can do, and use this information to support the assessment of children's initial starting points, and to plan and provide activities that will build upon skills that children already have  include the views of parents in the evaluation of the provision and use this information develop and implement carefully planned improvements.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector completed a joint observation with the childminder.  The inspector talked to the childminder about her practice.  The inspector looked at relevant documentation, such as the childminder's self- evaluation and a selection of policies and children's records.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

Arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder's home is safe and secure. She has assessed the risks of the family pets and is aware of her responsibilities to supervise children, and ensure pets have necessary checks to keep them healthy. Required suitability checks for all adults who live in the household have been completed. The childminder is aware of the local child protection referral procedures to follow if she is concerned about a child. She has taken some steps to review her provision, in order to improve. She welcomes good practice ideas shared with her by other early years professionals and has readily implemented a number of suggested improvements. However, the childminder does not make good enough use of her assessments of children's progress, to help her plan effectively for children's precise learning needs.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

The childminder's practice is variable with regard to providing children with activities that help them make the best possible progress. She does not consistently use what she knows about each child's abilities to plan and provide fully for the next steps in their learning. However, the childminder supports children's language development well. She interprets younger toddlers' needs effectively, as they communicate through gestures and some first words. She talks to children, explains what is happening and uses songs and rhymes. This builds on their understanding and gives them time to hear and practise new words.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

The childminder has good relationships with parents and grandparents, and works with them to ensure children's emotional and practical needs are well met. They settle into a new environment with confidence. The childminder praises children's achievements and they show pride at their successes. The close relationship they build with the childminder means their emotional well-being is well supported. Children are gaining independence as they select their own activities and feed themselves. The childminder ensures children develop an understanding of healthy lifestyles by providing opportunities for regular exercise. They develop an understanding of dangers and how to keep themselves safe. They learn how to cross roads and use equipment in local parks safety. However, nappy changing facilities are not considered well enough to make sure children play and learn in an environment that is as hygienic as possible.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Children gain basic skills to prepare them for learning in pre-school and school. However, some children are not making as much progress as they could, due to inconsistent planning for their future learning. Children are prepared well emotionally for moving on to other settings. They independently choose resources and learn to manage their care needs. Children enjoy looking at books, listening to stories and joining in with rhymes. They are very well behaved and demonstrate good manners. They are quick to try new skills and they handle equipment safely.
