This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:
The childminder does not maintain all documentation required for the safe management of the provision. She does not maintain a record of children's hours of attendance. This is also a breach of the Childcare Register requirements. The childminder does not use all opportunities to encourage older children to manage some daily tasks by themselves, to further encourage their independence.
p.1
It has the following strengths
The childminder establishes positive relationships with the early years settings where children receive their early years education. She works very closely with school staff, to effectively support and complement children's learning. Children behave well and they know what is expected of them. The childminder provides children with clear explanations so that they understand the consequences of their actions. The childminder keeps parents well informed about their children's progress and current interests. She helps parents to continue their children's enjoyment of learning at home. Children have lots of fun with this kind and caring childminder. They clearly thoroughly enjoy the time they spend with her at the end of their school day.
p.1
What the setting needs to do to improve further
To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage and the Childcare Register the provider must:
p.2
Due Date
maintain a daily record of the names of the children being cared for and their hours of attendance. 09/07/2016
p.2
Due Date
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:
p.2
Due Date
increase opportunities for children to learn how to manage even more daily routine tasks by themselves, to develop further their independence.
p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector spoke to the childminder and engaged with the children at appropriate times during the inspection. The inspector observed the quality of the childminder's interactions with children. The inspector and the childminder evaluated the effectiveness of an activity together. The inspector viewed the spaces, toys and equipment used for childminding purposes, indoors and outdoors. The inspector looked at a range of documentation, including policies and self-evaluation information.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement
The childminder's understanding of the safeguarding and welfare requirements, relating to record keeping, requires improvement. She does not keep accurate attendance records for children who are in her care. Some hours of attendance have been recorded in the past, but a record has not been kept for a long period of time. The childminder has agreed to address this immediately so that the risk to children's welfare and safety is minimal. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder keeps her child protection knowledge up to date and knows who she must report to with any concerns. The childminder supervises children and risk assesses her home to promote children's safety. She uses self-evaluation and uses the knowledge she gains to reflect on the quality of the service she provides. Since the last inspection, the childminder has made improvements to develop her practice, and children's care and play experiences.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder knows the children very well and plans activities that they enjoy. Older children enjoy sharing their knowledge with the childminder and eagerly look through books with her. The childminder complements their learning at school well. For example, she gives good explanations about the illustrations they see in a book and teaches them new vocabulary. Older children enjoy using their mathematical skills as they discuss quantity, weight and volume during a fruit-tasting activity. The childminder provides children with opportunities to learn about different people and communities.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder forms secure emotional bonds with the children in her care. Children respond well to her praise and encouragement, which contributes to their good self- esteem. The childminder encourages children to follow clear hygiene practices and provides them with a selection of nutritious snacks and meals. Children like regular opportunities to be active. For example, they thoroughly enjoy using the swings, bouncing on the trampoline and discovering insects under rocks and stones. Children are confident and content. Overall, the childminder encourages children to develop the confidence to try new things but, occasionally, she does not use all opportunities to fully promote their independence.
