This provision is good

 The childminder keeps herself well informed and regularly develops her practice. For example, she attends training and shares good practice ideas with other professionals, to help her provide additional learning experiences for children.  The childminder uses her good observation and assessment process to effectively monitor children's progress and accurately plan activities for them. This helps children make good progress.  The childminder has effective risk assessments in place. She carefully considers the impact of changes in the environment and shares these with parents to help her keep children safe.  Young children develop good physical skills. They explore a variety of activities, such as putting balls into cups and using musical instruments. Children develop good physical coordination.  The childminder develops effective parent partnerships. Their feedback shows they are happy with the communication they receive and the progress their children make.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always make the best of every opportunity to help very young children to develop their vocabulary.  Children do not always have access to the outdoor area. This does not fully support those children who learn better outside.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 build on the existing support for very young children to develop their communication and language skills  provide children who prefer to learn outside with more opportunities to have regular access to the outdoor area.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder and children playing together indoors and outdoors.  The inspector and childminder participated in a joint observation.  The inspector reviewed a sample of documentation.  The inspector and childminder spoke about safeguarding.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of child protection and knows how to report any concerns she may have. The childminder reflects on her practice regularly. For example, to improve her practice, she considers what she should change and adjusts her activities according to her evaluation. This helps to build on children's learning experiences. The childminder works closely with other professionals to ensure that she cares for children with additional needs. For example, she follows guidance from specialists well to respond to children's needs and support their learning. The childminder uses her knowledge and training to improve outcomes for children.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder encourages young children to play with a wide variety of resources they are interested in. Children learn key skills to support their physical development. For example, when they are interested in playing with the ball pit, the childminder cleverly extends their learning through helping them to put the balls inside different sized containers. The childminder promotes literacy and mathematical development well. For example, she reads stories to young children and counts the pictures in the story to help them to learn some numbers. The childminder takes children on a variety of outings, such as music sessions, soft play and parks. This helps children to learn about their local community, develop confidence to visit new places, and learn social and physical skills.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children have formed a strong and secure relationship with the childminder. They often go to her for hugs. She is warm and affectionate with them and helps them to feel settled. The childminder constantly gives children praise and helps them to build good self-esteem. She promotes children's personal well-being effectively. Very young children learn about healthy lifestyles through, for example, eating healthy snacks and meals. The childminder effectively promotes good sharing. For example, when two young children want to play with the same toy, she talks to them about sharing and helps them to find similar activities to play at the same time.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Young children focus well during play. They confidently explore and examine resources to gain a better understanding of their immediate world. Children make good progress from their starting points and are well prepared for their next stage of learning.
