Previous inspection: Requires Improvement

p.1

Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Requires improvement Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder does not maintain an accurate daily register of children's attendance.  The childminder does not effectively use planning, observations or assessments to provide interesting and challenging activities that meet children's individual development needs and support the next steps in their learning.  The childminder does not gather sufficient information from parents regarding children's capabilities to plan for their individual learning needs when they first attend.  The childminder does not use any form of self-evaluation to review and monitor the service she offers. She has not identified any areas of weakness in practice. The childminder has not yet fully implemented an ambitious programme of professional development.  The childminder does not provide sufficient opportunities which raise children's awareness of similarities and differences between themselves and others.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 The childminder promotes children's positive behaviour. She gives them regular praise as they play. This contributes effectively towards promoting their confidence and self- esteem.  The good level of encouragement shown by the childminder helps to support children's love of learning through play effectively. This contributes towards children's growing independence.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage and the Childcare Register the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

 ensure a daily register of children's hours of attendance is completed and maintained 17/06/2016

p.2

Due Date

 use the information gained from observations and assessments to plan experiences and opportunities which support children's stage of development and the next steps in their learning. 15/07/2016

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 improve the use of self-evaluation and accurately identify strengths and priorities for improvement  establish an ongoing programme of professional development and strengthen the quality of the provision  raise children's awareness of diversity and help them respect and value differences between themselves and others  gather information about children's capabilities from parents on entry to ensure their learning is effectively planned from when they first attend the setting.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector engaged in discussions with the childminder and children throughout the inspection at appropriate times.  The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector and childminder undertook a joint observation of an activity.  The inspector viewed areas of the childminder's home used for childminding.  The inspector discussed self-evaluation and how the views of parents and children are included to drive improvement.  The inspector took into account the views of parents.  The inspector reviewed relevant documentation, including evidence of qualifications, suitability of household members, children's learning journals and policies and procedures.

p.3

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder is aware of potential signs and symptoms of abuse and who she would contact if she had any concerns. The childminder assesses risks to ensure that any hazards within the home and outings are minimised. However, she has not maintained a daily record of children's hours of attendance. This compromises children's safety and well-being in the event of an emergency. The childminder has not prioritised her professional development to ensure she focuses on improving children's care and learning experiences. She has also not fully implemented the actions or recommendation from the last inspection. This means procedures for self-evaluation are weak and the childminder has a limited capacity to improve.

p.4

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

The childminder observes children to recognise their achievements. However, she does not use the information gained from observations and assessments to plan purposeful experiences to support their next steps in learning. The childminder listens perceptively and skilfully questions children during activities to help improve their critical-thinking skills. This approach successfully helps to support children's communication and language skills and motivates them to learn. Children enjoy playing with the toys and activities available to them. For instance, the childminder provides some opportunities for older children to develop their writing skills and they enjoy making marks with pens on clipboards. When children first start at the setting, the childminder liaises with parents to gather general information about children's individual care needs. However, she does not gather sufficient information about what children can do on entry. This does not ensure their learning is

effectively planned for when they first attend the setting.

p.4

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

The childminder has a friendly and warm manner and children are happy and settled in her company. She liaises with parents daily to share children's routines and talks to them about what they have enjoyed and experienced. The childminder visits playgroups and promotes children's physical development when out in the local environment. Children are provided with a good range of freshly prepared, nutritious meals and snacks, which contributes significantly to keeping them healthy. However, the childminder does not fully extend children's awareness of diversity to help develop their understanding of the similarities and differences between themselves and others.

p.4

Outcomes for children require improvement

The childminder does not support children to make progress which is typical for their age in all areas of their development. Children are not well prepared for the next stage in their learning, including the move on to school. However, children's language skills are developing and they enjoy learning.
