This provision is good

 The childminder provides a welcoming and safe environment for children. She is committed and enthusiastic, enabling children to experience good quality experiences in her home-from-home setting.  The childminder evaluates her provision to identify what works well and which aspects of practice she would like to improve. She involves children and parents when reviewing her practice, and seeks their ideas and suggestions for improvement.  Children are busy and engaged throughout their time at the setting, both indoors and outside. They freely choose from opportunities available to them which enthuse them and keep them interested and motivated to participate in play-based learning.  The childminder provides encouragement to children to have a go. She supports younger children to use challenging equipment at the park. Children carefully attempt the monkey bars, showing determination as the childminder stays close by.

p.1

This provision is good

 Children develop good social skills and interact well with their peers. Mealtimes are sociable occasions and children sit together to share stories of the day and recall past experiences. They listen carefully, show an interest and engage others in conversation.  The childminder is a good role model for children. She has high expectations for their behaviour and is consistent in the messages she gives. Children learn to be kind and polite to adults and other children, and develop good manners.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not yet access a broad and wide range of professional development opportunities to further develop her all-round skills and knowledge.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

 continue to build on professional development opportunities, taking into account the individual needs of children who attend, to raise the quality of provision to the highest level.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors, and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector went on the school run with the childminder and accompanied the childminder and the children on a visit to the local park.  The inspector looked at relevant documentation, such as the childminder's self- evaluation, and a sample of the childminder's policies and procedures.  The inspector spoke with parents, the childminder and children at appropriate times during the inspection, and took account of the written testimonials of parents.  The inspector checked evidence of the suitability of the childminder and other household members, and the childminder's qualifications.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a secure understanding of the procedure to follow if she is concerned that a child is at risk of harm. She is extremely vigilant about keeping children safe and completes regular risk assessments to identify and minimise any risks to children. The childminder competently supervises children when out and about to maintain their safety, taking account of children's ages and stages of development. The childminder has good links with the local school. She often visits the school to see what children do in the classroom and to find out about the strategies teachers use to support children's learning. She robustly passes information to parents, which the school gives out, and acts as an effective go-between to share information. The childminder is well organised and maintains appropriate records safely in line with legal requirements, such as information about the child and accident

records. The childminder has developed good relationships with parents, who are very complimentary of the service she offers. The childminder shares information with parents daily about what children have been doing and who their friends are. She also shares her policies and procedures to ensure parents are fully informed of how the setting is run.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder is fully aware of children's interests and capabilities. She provides them with a range of resources which keeps them interested and motivated, and is suitable for their age and stage of development. Resources are freely available for children to self- select. Children quickly settle on returning from the park. A small group of children share a book where they identify different mammals. The childminder is perceptive to their interests and joins in. She asks children questions to encourage them to use their thinking skills and provides further information about the animals to expand their knowledge. The childminder promotes children's interests beyond the setting, such as supporting them to attend clubs put on by the school and to practice their musical instruments. The childminder shows an interest in their expanding knowledge and talks to them about what they learned to reinforce their understanding.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder regularly takes on board children's suggestions about what they want to do when organising her provision. Children are keen to express their views and suggestions and ask if they can go to the park. The childminder notes children's interests and duly organises a trip to the park. This helps children to feel valued and respected, and promotes their self-confidence and self-esteem. Children experience active lifestyles and benefit from regular physical-play opportunities outdoors to promote their physical well- being. Children are fully familiar with routines. They behave well throughout their time at the setting. They listen carefully and consistently adhere to the rules and boundaries the childminder sets. Children manage risk effectively. They independently organise taking turns on the trampoline to ensure they abide by the rules for its safe use. Children safely and competently cross the road under the childminder's careful guidance. The childminder

is fully aware of the abilities of the age range of children who attend and gives extra support and closer supervision to the younger children.
