This provision is good

 The childminder provides a child-friendly and stimulating environment. She knows the children well and interacts positively with them to develop their interests, value their opinions and help them to settle.  Children are very secure and confident. They have good access to a wide range of interesting resources that support their interests and learning needs very well.  The childminder develops her skills well. She links with other professionals to gain new ideas for activities and to ensure that she meets the safeguarding and welfare requirements.  The childminder prepares children effectively for moving on to school. She works closely with parents to ensure children are independent and can do things for themselves. Older children communicate clearly, sharing their thoughts and ideas. They have good self-esteem and social skills. Children make good progress from their starting points.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder interacts positively with children; however, she does not always successfully build on what they already know and extend their thinking and understanding further.  Children have good opportunities to count, and learn about shape and size. However, the childminder misses opportunities to introduce older children to simple addition and subtraction as they play.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 challenge older children more to build on what they already know and extend their thinking and understanding further  extend older children's mathematical skills to introduce them to simple calculation.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed activities, indoors and outdoors.  The inspector spoke with the childminder and children at appropriate times throughout the visit.  The inspector looked at the childminder's written policies and procedures, and her records and assessment folders for children.  The inspector took into account the written feedback from parents via the childminder's questionnaires, letters and email.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a secure knowledge of child protection matters and the procedures to follow to protect children from harm. She provides a safe environment and teaches children how to keep safe. The childminder updates her skills and practice well through reading and professional communication with others, which has helped her to identify areas to improve. This has led her to increase her range of resources that challenge younger children to explore cause and effect, and to make resources more accessible to the children. The childminder involves and encourages parents well in their children's learning. She seeks their views about her service, to help her build on her strengths and accommodate their wishes.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder uses her assessment and planning processes effectively to track and monitor children's progress, and to plan activities that address any gaps in their learning. She encourages children to follow their own ideas for play and engages with them positively to develop their ideas. For example, using children's love of wheeled vehicles, the childminder provides resources for older children to draw their favourite train and to number it. When playing with the trains, she asks the children questions about how the trains travel and what happens next, encouraging children to look at the differences and see how they vary in size and shape.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder supports children well to settle and feel secure. She communicates effectively with parents to follow children's familiar routines. She is kind and sensitive to the children's needs. Children have a strong bond with the childminder and are emotionally confident. The childminder supports children well to be respectful and to have good manners. She is a positive role model and children learn to be kind and consider the needs of others. The childminder supports children well to be safe. They learn to use knives to spread toppings on their toast and keep safe when on outings.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are confident and self-assured. They interact well with others and engage in their activities for good periods of time, showing concentration and focus. Older children have good mathematical skills to count how many, identify shapes, and compare the sizes and lengths of their toys, such as trains. Children communicate clearly, giving instructions to others and sharing their ideas. Older children develop good early writing skills and understand that print carries meaning, for example, to label things and give instructions. Children develop the key skills for future learning in preparation for pre-school and moving on to school.
