This provision is good

 Children settle well with the friendly and caring childminder and they develop close relationships with her. She sensitively supports opportunities for them to build on their independence, for instance, during mealtimes and toilet routines.  The childminder knows children's interests well and she plans interesting activities that stimulate their curiosity to explore and learn. Children are busy and engaged and enjoy their learning experiences.  Children develop their mathematical skills well. For example, they learn to name shapes and confidently use number names in their play. Children learn to identify numbers of personal significance, such as their age.  The childminder monitors children's progress regularly and identifies areas in which they need further support. This helps to close any gaps in children's learning. Children make good progress and develop skills for their future.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Children do not always have opportunities to explore activities and resources that reflect their home languages, cultures and backgrounds.  Although the childminder works closely with parents to assess children's starting points, she does not continually encourage their participation in children's learning on an ongoing basis.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed children and their interactions with the childminder.  The inspector viewed a sample of documents, including children's learning records.  The inspector held discussions with the childminder when appropriate.  The inspector took account of the views of parents and children.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder knows how to identify child protection issues. She has a good awareness of the procedures to follow should she be concerned about children's welfare. The childminder reflects well on her practice and works in partnership with local authority advisors and parents to help plan for improvements. She has made good progress in meeting the actions and recommendations raised in her previous inspection. For example, she has attended relevant training and has revised the procedures for observing, assessing and planning for children's progress. She has strengthened partnerships with schools and supports older children effectively to complement what they learn at school.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder interacts well with children to help support their enthusiasm in what they choose to do. For example, she joins in their play and they pretend to have a birthday party. She skilfully extends their mathematical skills and their communication and language development as they play. For example, children learn to count the candles and they share their thoughts and ideas with each other to extend their play. The childminder provides opportunities for children to develop their creativity, for example, they sing songs and make music with instruments.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children develop positive relationships with each other and enjoy sharing their experiences. For example, they thoroughly enjoy playing a memory game together and they learn to wait for their turn to find the matching pictures. Children develop positive social skills, such as politely asking to be excused from the table after eating their lunch. Children develop their understanding of a healthy lifestyle well. For example, they have regular opportunities to exercise in fresh air, such as during visits to the local parks and when playing in the childminder's garden.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children develop their understanding of how things work. For example, they place play food 'bread' in a toaster and they wind the knob, listen to the sounds and watch it pop out. Older children display strong literacy skills. For example, they make up their own stories and use their good knowledge of letter sounds to write their story. Younger children learn about the world they live in. For example, they learn about different occupations when they pretend to be builders and police officers. Children make good progress and are well prepared for the next stage in their learning, including their move to school.
