This provision is good

 The childminder is kind, caring and friendly. Children form strong emotional bonds with her and show they feel safe and secure.  The childminder observes and assesses children's learning consistently. She accurately identifies learning priorities for each child and plans activities that challenge and extend them. Children make good progress in their learning.  The childminder's effective monitoring systems enable her to identify when children need additional support to help them achieve. She works closely in partnerships with parents and agencies to narrow gaps in individual children's learning.  The childminder and co-minder work effectively together. They discuss and evaluate their practice consistently to help ensure they continue to improve the quality of the provision. For example, since they both registered as childminders, they have improved the outdoor area so that it is a more effective learning environment for children,

especially for those who learn better outdoors.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder has not fully developed the organisation of the resources to enhance opportunities for children to choose what they want to do and what they want to play with.  Children do not consistently have access to a wide variety of experiences that build on their already strong sensory skills.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 strengthen opportunities for children to make choices and initiate their play independently  enhance opportunities for children to explore and investigate a wider range of sensory experiences.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed children's activities indoors and in the garden.  The inspector sampled children's learning records and other relevant documentation.  The inspector looked at the childminder's self-evaluation form.  The inspector took account of the views of parents and children.  The inspector discussed childcare practice with the childminder.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of her role and responsibilities if she has a child protection concern. She identifies and minimises risks successfully. This helps children play and move around safely and independently. The childminder is keen to improve her knowledge and skills. For example, she attends training and seeks advice from other professionals, such as speech therapists. The childminder makes good use of ideas she gains from speech therapists to improve children's communication skills further.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder engages children in purposeful play. For example, she focuses well on providing stimulating learning experiences that reflect children's current interests. She interacts skilfully with children and promotes their learning. For example, she makes good use of everyday routines, such as snack times, to count with children and extend their mathematical skills. Children enjoy listening to the childminder read stories. She builds on their language skills, for example, by encouraging them to talk about the pictures. Children develop a good awareness of shape and colour, for example, when they choose and name items in a special bag.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children benefit from the childminder's praise and encouragement. They are keen to do things for themselves. Children play happily with others and on their own. They behave well and learn to respect differences in others. Children develop a strong sense of belonging and a good awareness of healthy lifestyles. They see to their own personal care needs, such as hand washing. The childminder provides children with healthy, freshly prepared meals and snacks. She actively reinforces children's understanding of what is good to eat and why. Children develop strong physical skills, for example, when they play outside in the fresh air.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are prepared well for the move to school. They develop good social skills and readily involve others in their play. Children make friends and share resources. They develop a good understanding of the need to follow rules. Children are confident around adults. They develop good communication skills. Children have the confidence to explore and find things out for themselves. They concentrate at activities and are well motivated.
