This provision is good

 The childminder provides a good range of interesting learning opportunities for children. They make good progress in their learning and development.  Children develop positive attitudes towards each other. They learn to share and respect others. Children build positive relationships with the childminder and learn a range of skills that prepare them well for school.  Partnerships with parents, other professionals and other early years providers are very effective. Children benefit from a consistent approach and a shared understanding of their care and learning needs. This is particularly effective for those children with special educational needs.  The childminder evaluates her setting effectively and makes well considered improvements that are in direct response to observations of children's needs.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder offers limited opportunities for children to extend their interests and express their ideas to enhance their creativity.  The childminder does not always encourage children to complete simple tasks for themselves.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder's interactions with children inside and outside.  The inspector sampled a range of documentation, including children's learning journals.  The inspector and the childminder evaluated the effectiveness of an activity together.  The inspector spoke with children and took into account the written views of parents.  The inspector held discussions with the childminder about her practice.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder understands child protection issues and implements robust safeguarding procedures. She understands her responsibility to promote children's safety and welfare. The childminder has attended training that has had a positive impact on the children in her care. For example, since training, the childminder has worked closely with parents to improve children's language skills. The childminder dedicates time for ongoing improvements. For example, the childminder has invested in a range of effective resources, including for role play that have encouraged elaborate role- play games and improved children's social, language and imaginative skills.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Children benefit from high-quality interactions with the childminder. For example, children play a game together and the childminder encourages them to count and take turns. The childminder makes effective and frequent observations of children's play. She evaluates learning well and tracks children's development to identify any gaps and plans activities to help them catch up. The childminder provides exciting activities in direct response to children's interests. For example, she teaches children to play a game of cat and mouse with a parachute in the garden, and to learn how to work together towards a common goal. The childminder helps children to develop their social skills. For example, she encourages children to help each other build a train track and solve simple problems together.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder helps children learn how to treat other people with thoughtfulness and respect. She provides a well-organised learning environment that encourages children to make choices and decisions about their play. The childminder helps children to improve their knowledge of how to stay fit and healthy, and enjoy a wide range of healthy snacks. She takes children on interesting local visits in the fresh air that contribute to their good health and physical development.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress in preparation for future learning. They are confident, happy and settled. Children develop good early reading and writing skills. For example, they enjoy books, retell stories, recognise letters in their name and draw pictures. Children learn to count and make predictions; for example, they touch and count a toy crocodile's teeth before his jaw closes shut during a game of chance. Children are good at working together. For example, they make suggestions to one another about where to put sand and how best to make a castle. Children behave well.
