This provision is good

 The chilminder carries out regular observations of children. She assesses children's abilities and checks their progress so that she is able to identify and close any gaps in their learning. Children make good progress as they benefit from the childminder's effective teaching.  The childminder is extremely supportive of children and their parents. She makes great efforts to develop an excellent understanding of all children in her care from the start. She is committed to ensuring that children's personal, social and emotional needs are exceptionally well met.  The childminder is very enthusiastic and makes excellent use of her local facilities to extend the range of learning experiences offered and enable children to be more involved in their wider community. This helps promote children's social skills and awareness of the world around them.  Children have superb relationships with the childminder. They are extremely happy and

settled in her care. The childminder prioritises children's independence skills. Children are confident in their own abilities and have high levels of self-esteem.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Although the childminder has built relationships with some of the other settings children attend, one is less responsive to this approach which does not enable the continuity for their learning and development to be fully promoted.  Occasionally, children do not have enough time to think about how to respond to questions and comments from the childminder. She sometimes overlooks opportunities to extend and challenge their knowledge, understanding and thinking skills as they play.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

 continue to develop ways to engage with and strengthen partnerships with other settings children attend, but who are less responsive to this approach so that precise information is consistently shared in order to continue building on all that children know and can do.  make better use of opportunities to enhance children's growing knowledge, understanding and thinking skills, giving them more time to respond to questions and discussions as they play.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during indoor and outdoor activities, and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector observed a planned activity and jointly evaluated this with the childminder.  The inspector spoke to the childminder and children at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector looked at relevant documentation, such as self-evaluation, children's learning records, a selection of policies, qualifications of the childminder and evidence of the suitability of all household members.  The inspector spoke to parents present on the day of the inspection and also took account of the views of parents through their written comments.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The qualified childminder is knowledgeable about how to report any concerns she may have about children and how to keep them safe in her care. She attends relevant safeguarding training to update her knowledge. She reflects on her practice and considers how she can improve her provision. The childminder has identified and attended further training to improve her skills and knowledge to deliver the educational programme. Consequently, this has had a positive impact on the monitoring of children's progress, identifying appropriate next steps and planning activities to meet children's individual and present learning needs.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder has a secure knowledge of how children learn through play. She provides a range of learning opportunities to keep children interested and motivated to learn. Children are confident to investigate resources and activities. The childminder involves children in many conversations. She takes an interest in what they have to say, which encourages further discussions. The childminder repeats words and extends sentences during play, which successfully increases children's vocabulary. Children use their senses and enjoy exploring different ways they can be creative with play dough. They investigate the texture as they squeeze it through their fingers and squeal with excitement as they flatten it with the rolling pin. Young children are introduced to mathematical concepts, such as big and little, when comparing different-sized spiders. Older children, count the candles on their pretend birthday cake and work out how many more, or fewer they will

need for the total to be the same, as their ages.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are outstanding

The childminder is highly effective at encouraging children's confidence, self-esteem and self-motivation. She is a positive role model in supporting children to show kindness and thoughtfulness to each other. The childminder has high expectations of children's conduct and manners. She provides clear and age-appropriate explanations. Children learn good personal hygiene practices and confidently manage their self-care needs. They confidently move around the childminder's home, independently selecting resources that interest them. The childminder encourages them to be active and energetic, discussing the benefits of exercise and being physically active. In addition, there is a vegetable patch where children delight in growing and harvesting their own vegetables. They talk about the effect of healthy foods they eat and identify that they need these to grow big and strong.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are consistently making good progress that is typical for their age. They gain many skills needed for the next stage in their learning in readiness for school. Children display good social and communication skills and enjoy taking part in conversations and talk confidently to visitors. They are motivated and interested learners and successfully share their ideas as they play.
