Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching indoors and outside and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector carried out a joint observation with the childminder.  The inspector looked at relevant documentation, such as policies and procedures, reviewed the childminder's self-evaluation and checked evidence of her suitability and the suitability of all adults who live or work on the premises.  The inspector took account of the views of a selection of parents through discussion and written documentation provided prior to inspection.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is outstanding

The childminder is extremely proactive and has a thirst for continuing to maintain her exceptionally high standards. Her current focus is to find even more ways to promote children's mathematical and literacy skills and she has recently implemented new methods to do this. The childminder encourages her assistants to gain further qualifications and she provides exemplary support and training which include meetings and peer observations. This impacts extremely well on outcomes for children. The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder demonstrates astute awareness of safeguarding issues and she ensures her assistants receive regular child protection training. An intercom system ensures that she is able to communicate with her assistants, should they be in a different part of the home. The childminder implements and embeds detailed policies and procedures. Record keeping is extremely robust and helps to keep children safe.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is outstanding

Teaching is superb. Older children are wonderfully supported to develop their concentration and physical skills as they construct a farm using real bricks and cement. The assistant provides support when needed but knows when to stand back and let the older children develop their critical-thinking skills. Younger children spend increasing periods of time mixing potions with coloured water and soap outdoors. The childminder capably extends the activity as she asks children to name and mix colours and collect and compare quantities of the liquid. There are excellent opportunities for children to explore their senses. They grow edible flowers which they delight in smelling. Younger children have a great time exploring dough. The assistant capably extends this for older children by encouraging them to describe the texture and smell. Older children enthusiastically learn about cause and effect as they confidently use a range of technology equipment.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are outstanding

The childminder promotes children's physical well-being and health especially well. Children learn to care for themselves and each other and the childminder uses exciting ways to encourage their consideration and empathy. For example, children grow a dinosaur from an egg, providing water and a jar for it to live inside. They particularly enjoy taking the dinosaur for outings and observing it to see how much it has developed. Children grow a range of vegetables and sit together during mealtimes as the childminder animatedly joins in with discussions about healthy foods and role models extremely positive hygiene practices.

p.3

Outcomes for children are outstanding

All children, including children who speak English as an additional language, make rapid progress in relation to their starting points and skills on entry. The childminder makes excellent use of additional funding to provide resources to effectively support children. Children of all ages develop a superb range of skills which prepares them for future learning and school. They positively communicate their wants and needs, confidently make predictions and learn how to solve problems.
