This provision is good

 Effective communication with parents contributes to the good progress children make. The childminder keeps parents well informed about their children's progress and shares ideas to encourage their development at home.  The childminder's consistent expectations and boundaries help children learn to recognise and manage their feelings. She creates a warm, nurturing environment to promote children's well-being. Children's behaviour is good.  Children enjoy social activities in the local community where they meet other children and adults. They develop good social skills in preparation for school.  Good improvements have been made since the last inspection. Careful observations of the children and comments from parents also help to inform the childminder's self- evaluation and the ongoing development of her service.  The childminder gets to know each child very well. She knows their individual interests

This provision is good

and uses this information skilfully to extend their learning.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always use questions to encourage the children to think and respond as they develop their play.  Direct links with other settings that children also attend are not yet fully established, to promote better consistency in children's care and education.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 develop questioning skills further, to encourage children to think and respond, and solve problems in their everyday activities  develop further the relationships with other professionals involved in children's care and learning, to promote a more consistent approach to children's development.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector toured the premises and viewed the resources with the childminder.  The inspector observed the children and the childminder at play.  The inspector examined the records and documents provided by the childminder.  The inspector read comments from parents about the provision.  The inspector discussed the self-evaluation process with the childminder.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder manages risks with care and has knowledge of the actions to take if she is concerned about the welfare of a child. The childminder is efficient and fulfils her role well. She diligently keeps the required records which help to safeguard the children in her care. The childminder continually develops her knowledge and skills through training and other professional development opportunities, to improve her teaching skills and children's learning. The childminder actively promotes equality and diversity, and provides a secure environment which reflects children's backgrounds.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder increases children's mathematical awareness very naturally as she refers to size, shape, position and quantity in her conversations as children play. Children confidently ask questions and talk about what they are doing. They learn to tell the time and recognise the numbers on the clock. The childminder completes thorough observations and assessments of children's learning. She ensures there are no gaps in their development, so that they make as much progress as possible. The childminder offers a wide variety of activities which are relevant to children's interests and stages of development. Children make good progress from their starting points.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children settle quickly, they know where the toys are and they show that they feel safe and secure in the familiar environment. Their social skills develop well as children enjoy activities in the local community, visit local parks and welcome other children to play with them. The children learn to look after the toys and help to tidy these away when they have finished playing. Sensitive encouragement and guidance from the childminder helps the children to develop their independence. Children demonstrate an increasing awareness of healthy lifestyles. They talk about and eat healthy foods, and practice and share their knowledge of good hygiene routines.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children explore, make choices and quickly settle to play independently. They talk to the childminder and share their ideas and plans; for example, as they set up a game of cricket, or use space well to set up a long train track. They are enthusiastic learners, listen well to others and are keen to try things for themselves. Children clearly enjoy developing their interests and skills and are well prepared for the next stages in their learning.
