This provision is good
The childminder uses feedback from his co-childminder, parents and children to help identify changes and improvements to benefit children. The childminder makes accurate assessments of children's learning. He uses the information to plan experiences that meet children's needs and interests. Children are happy to join in and make good progress in their learning. The childminder has good partnerships with parents and other professionals. He exchanges information with them regularly, to gain an understanding of children's starting points and of what they need to do next. The childminder makes sure children experience new things to help prepare them for moving on in their learning, such as exploring the nearby parks, going to toddler groups and collecting children from school. Children cope well with changes and are confident with others. Children form good attachments with the childminder. He is a good role model for the

children. Overall, children behave well.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder misses some opportunities to support children to explore and use technology, to increase their learning and development. The childminder sometimes curbs children's imagination and creativity, such as when he provides drawings for them to colour, rather than letting them make their own.

What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of the childminder's teaching in the home. The inspector took into account the views of parents through written testimonials. The inspector carried out a joint evaluation of children's learning with the childminder. The inspector spoke with the childminder, co-childminder and children at appropriate times during the inspection. The inspector sampled paperwork, including children's records, suitability records, planning and self-evaluation.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The childminder works well with his co-childminder to evaluate practice and identify areas for improvement. For example, they have changed the way that they monitor children's development and plan for their learning to make sure they include information from parents. The childminder makes sure that he develops his knowledge and skills, such as through research and attending training courses. He has made changes to policies to include current guidance and changes to safeguarding legislation. The childminder knows what to do in the event of concerns about a child's welfare. Safeguarding is effective.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder works well with the different ages of children to develop their interests and support their learning. For example, he teaches children mathematics, such as when he asks children to tell him the number of legs an octopus has. He then helped them to count the legs on the picture he had drawn. The childminder talked with children about their play to support their language skills. For example, he asked questions, offered suggestions and provided new words for the children to learn. The childminder shared favourite books with children, helping to develop their understanding of the world. For example, when reading a story about a monster in the loch, he engaged children in conversation about how the diver could breathe underwater using tanks filled with air.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder's home is welcoming. Overall, children have chance to make choices about what to play with. The childminder supports young children to keep trying. For instance, when posting plastic alphabetic letters into the shape-sorter post box, he sensitively encouraged children to turn the shape around so that it fitted into the right hole for the letters. The childminder helps children to learn about healthy food choices. For example, he provides a variety of fruit and vegetables in the home, and when on outings to a cafe he discusses suitable choices from the menu with them. Children develop good physical skills. For example, the childminder takes children to the local parks and helps them to climb up and descend the slide, or encourages them to join in with a game of football.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children are content and make good progress. All children's language develops well and they are confident in their interactions with others. Older children use pens and crayons competently, such as when they attempt to draw shapes. Children express their needs and develop good self-care skills. For instance, they let the childminder know when they are hungry and tell him why they need to wash their hands first to get rid of germs.
