Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector observed an activity and jointly evaluated this with the childminder. The inspector looked at children's assessment records and a range of other documentation. The inspector checked evidence of the suitability of adults living on the premises and the childminder's qualifications. The inspector spoke with the childminder and the children at appropriate times throughout the inspection.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder keeps up to date with current and new legislation. She ensures that all adults within the home have undertaken full suitability checks. She risk assesses her setting continuously and understands her responsibility to keep children safe from harm. The childminder understands the different types of abuse and how to recognise a child who is at risk of harm. She has an appropriate understanding of the professionals to contact for advice and support if she has a concern. The childminder is committed to supporting children to reach their potential; she reflects on the quality of her practice and has a positive attitude to continuously improving her setting.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
Children thoroughly enjoy their time with the childminder, who understands how children learn and develop. They are challenged in their play and the childminder plans their next steps well. For example, she supports children to develop their early physical skills, encouraging crawling by putting items of interest just out of their reach. Children excitedly engage and the childminder gives praise and encouragement. This motivates them to want to learn and develops their desire to try new things and persevere with tasks. Children are developing good communication skills. The childminder uses songs, repeats words and uses continuous conversation to support early language development. She observes children during their play and monitors their progress. She knows children very well and quickly identifies gaps in their learning, which she promptly closes. All children make good progress in their learning and development.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Children settle well in the childminder's care. She tailors the settling-in process to their individual needs and gathers information from parents regarding children's routines. She uses this information well, which helps children feel secure and supports their welfare. A daily diary is kept for each child. Information is shared with parents regarding what children have eaten, how long they have slept and the activities they have enjoyed throughout the day. This ensures a consistent approach to meeting children's needs and provides the opportunity for consultation as their needs and routines change. The childminder holds a current paediatric first-aid qualification and knows how to deal with any accidents or injuries children sustain. She supervises children well and all children know the rules and boundaries. The childminder gives clear expectations for behaviour and praises children appropriately.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children make good progress in all areas of their development and are prepared well for school and their future learning. They are confident, sociable and independent. Children communicate and listen well, take turns and form relationships with their peers. Older children are developing good early literacy and numeracy skills. All children are eager to participate in activities and are motivated to learn.
