This provision is good
Managers use self-evaluation well to reflect on their provision and identify the strengths and priorities for improvement for the club. Children have fun as they play and enjoy the experiences on offer. They have an active role in the running of the club as they share ideas for activities with staff. Communication between the club, parents and local schools is very good. Staff share information about children's interests and achievements effectively with parents and teachers. Parents state that they feel fully informed about their children's day. The club has clear procedures for promoting positive behaviour and staff act as good role models. Behaviour is extremely good. For example, children take turns and share toys and equipment with their friends.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
Children enjoy the activities and resources provided to encourage them to consider the lives and traditions of people in their community and wider world. However, these opportunities tend to be limited to events that mark cultural celebrations and other special events and are not generally available for children to explore freely. The identification of staff training needs is not always as precise as it could be to support staff to effectively improve their practice.

What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

Inspection activities
The inspector looked at relevant documents, including the registration, insurance and first-aid certificates, and a sample of policies. The inspector observed the quality of the learning environment and activities available for the children. The inspector spoke to staff about their understanding of safeguarding procedures. The inspector looked at comments from parents and took account of their views.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Staff attend ongoing training and share the information they gain with their colleagues, successfully raising the standards of care throughout the provision. Safeguarding is effective. Staff are knowledgeable about the signs that may indicate a concern about children's welfare and are aware of their responsibility to report any concerns that arise. There are robust procedures for monitoring the safety of the environment. Staff complete, and regularly review, risk assessments to minimise possible hazards in the club and when on outings. Staff actively seek the views of parents, for example, through a suggestion box and comments book. Parents praise the variety of activities and support they receive from staff.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
Children enjoy a wide variety of activities and experiences, such as arts and crafts, music, cooking and puzzles. There are also daily outings, successfully planned to engage children's interest. For example, children go to parks, farms and zoos and trips on the river. Staff observe children and note down significant moments for individual children, which they use in their future planning. Children are motivated and eager to participate in all activities. Children play very well in mixed age groups and older children act as good role models for the younger children.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Overall, staff are effective at helping children to learn to respect others. For example, they remind children about taking turns and sharing toys and equipment, not only in the club, but with the public during outings. Staff are very effective in supporting children to learn how to deal with their own personal care. For example, they are working with an oral health project run by the local authority and encourage children to brush their teeth after meals. Children develop skills of independence as they take responsibility for everyday routines. For example, children lay the table for mealtimes and serve themselves with water and food in the breakfast and after-school club.
