This provision is good

 The childminder uses meaningful praise and encouragement to promote children's positive behaviour. Children are confident, demonstrate good levels of self-esteem and they behave well.  Children have freedom to access resources and are encouraged to make their own play choices. Children are motivated to learn and they communicate their ideas well.  The childminder provides children with a safe and welcoming, learning environment. She plans well-considered activities that meet the age, abilities and interests of children.  The childminder monitors and evaluates the provision well. She identifies clear targets for continuous improvement and gathers feedback from parents and children. She acts upon the very positive feedback she is given.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder is not yet observing and accurately assessing the quality of her assistant's practice.  Children do not always have opportunities to develop their thinking and ideas to help them solve problems.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 provide more targeted guidance and support to promote the development of the assistant's teaching practice  help children explore ways to develop their thinking, ideas and solve problems, to extend their learning further.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed children playing and the childminders interactions with them.  The inspector looked at a sample of documentation, including children's records, and the childminders and co-childminders suitability records.  The inspector looked at the childminder's self-evaluation form and a selection of risk assessments and policy documents, including the safeguarding policy and procedures.  The inspector had a tour of the areas used for childminding. She also took account of the views of parents through their written feedback.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder provides children with a well-organised setting. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder understands her responsibility to keep children safe from harm. She knows who to contact if she has any concerns about children's welfare. The childminder completes risk assessments of the premises and for outings, to minimise potential hazards to children effectively. These are shared with co-childminders and assistants to ensure consistency in children's safety. The childminder monitors children's progress effectively to promptly identify and respond to any gaps in their achievements. The childminder shares information about children's progress and interests when they move to other settings, including school. This helps to ensure continuity for children's learning.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder observes and assesses children's progress effectively to review and plan for their future learning. A balanced range of activities helps to target children's individual learning needs. For example, babies take their first steps with the childminder's support and encouragement. The [lay space is organised effectively so that children have the confidence and freedom to explore. Children confidently move around and select resources that interest them. For example, they particularly enjoy exploring the hidden garden and digging with their spades and finding insects. The childminder supports children's language and speaking skills effectively.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder is calm and children respond well to her affectionate but firm manner. She gently reminds them of her expectations and guides their behaviour well, such as with consistent praise when they behave appropriately. Children readily approach her when they need comfort or reassurance. They develop good social skills and cooperate with each other. Children learn about being healthy. They eat healthy snacks and lunches, and have daily exercise and fresh air. For example, children develop coordination moving to music, and use equipment in the garden.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children confidently engage in their choice of activity. Children develop good literacy skills, such as linking letter sounds to those in their names. They develop a strong understanding about the natural world and confidently talk about their experiences. For example, they talked about when they held caterpillars when reading an animal story. Children concentrate well and are motivated learners. They make good progress, and gain the skills they need for the next stage in their learning, including starting school.
