This provision is good

 The childminder develops positive partnerships with parents and other providers. This helps to promote continuity of care and learning for children.  The childminder reflects on her work and develops ideas for improvements with her assistant. She values the views of parents and professionals to help her continuously improve and achieve good outcomes for children.  Children learn about healthy eating and enjoy fresh air and exercise in the garden. They develop a good awareness of living a healthy lifestyle.  The childminder provides warm nurturing care. She offers lots of praise and encouragement, and supports children's emotional well-being effectively. Children form confident relationships with the childminder and her assistant.  Children's communication and language skills are encouraged very well. For example, the childminder models language and asks questions that encourage them to think. Children make good progress from their starting points.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not provide regular opportunities for children to learn about nature and the natural world.  The childminder does not always ensure that a wide range of books is easily accessible to support children's learning and interests.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 increase opportunities for children to learn about the natural world  provide more opportunities for children to develop their interest in books during their play.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector toured the premises and viewed resources with the childminder.  The inspector observed the children, the childminder and her assistant at play and spoke to them at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector examined records and documents provided by the childminder.  The inspector read comments from parents about the provision.  The inspector discussed the self-evaluation process with the childminder.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. Good care is taken to manage risks, and the childminder and her assistant know what action to take if they are concerned about the welfare of a child. The childminder completes regular training and shares ideas for good practice with her assistant, to help maintain a consistently high standard of care and learning. The childminder carefully monitors children's progress, enabling any gaps in learning to be addressed. She respects parents' wishes and works with them to encourage children's learning and support continuity. Parents comment very positively on the good quality care and learning opportunities that the childminder provides. The childminder is aware of informing Ofsted of relevant events and changes.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder observes and assesses children's progress as they play and she adapts and extends learning skilfully. Children explore the sand and water, developing good coordination as they dig and pour, and language skills as they talk about their actions. The childminder and her assistant encourage early mathematical skills through enjoyable activities. For example, they provide opportunities for children to sort, match and develop their awareness of size and position in planned activities. Children confidently explore the resources set out for them, ask for items and enjoy adult-led activities. Outings in the local community enable the children to meet other children and adults, widening their awareness of the world around them.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children's behaviour indicates that they feel safe and secure in the childminder's care. The childminder and her assistant teach children to take turns, be respectful and kind to others by setting a positive example. Children learn about traditional and cultural events. Children enjoy good opportunities to develop their physical skills. For example, they run, dig and climb in the garden and visit local activities and parks. Children learn about keeping safe in the sun, eating healthily and the importance of good hygiene routines. The childminder encourages children to learn about safe behaviour through gentle reminders. Children behave well.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress in their learning and develop the skills that will help them as they move to nursery or school. For example, they demonstrate early awareness of letter recognition and participate in imaginative and creative play, including singing, painting and drawing. They develop confident social skills and an awareness of the needs of others.
