This provision is good
Children enjoy choosing activities and they follow their own interests. They are motivated to learn and engage well in the different activities that staff provide. All children, including those who are learning English as an additional language and those who have special educational needs, make good progress from their starting points. The staff monitor children's development effectively. For example, they identify any gaps in children's learning and take prompt action to reduce these to support children's progress. Staff form positive relationships with children, which helps to support children's emotional well-being effectively. Children are happy, confident and behave well. Partnerships with parents are strong. For example, the regular sharing of information provides continuity for children and involves parents in their children's learning well. The manager and staff use self-evaluation well to identify areas for improvement. They

now seek the views of parents and children to guide improvements and to help provide positive outcomes for children. The changes made have raised the nursery's quality.

It is not yet outstanding because:
At times, staff do not encourage children to think for themselves and express their views and ideas. Staff do not always take opportunities to encourage children to use their early writing skills.

What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

Inspection activities
The inspector had a tour of the pre-school. The inspector spoke with parents, children and staff to gain their views. The inspector observed children and staff during play. The inspector examined a sample of policies, documents and children's records. The inspector discussed the self-evaluation process with the manager and provider.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. Staff know the procedures to follow to protect children's welfare. Recruitment processes are rigorous and ensure that staff are suitable to work with children. The manager uses the close links developed with local schools well to help the transfer process when children move on. She provides staff with regular support and identifies further training needs to enable them to continue to extend their knowledge of how children learn. For example, staff have trained in using signing to communicate with children, and this has greatly benefitted certain groups of children, including those who are learning English as an additional language. Staff work closely with outside professionals to ensure that children who need extra help are supported well.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
Staff know the children well. They make accurate assessments which allow them to plan for children's individual needs effectively. They hold regular discussions with parents to share children's achievements and next steps in learning. Children develop good physical skills. For example, they create structures from wooden blocks, and practise throwing and catching outside. They demonstrate high levels of self-esteem as they achieve this. Children enjoy learning about the world around them; for instance, they explore the digging area, and collect the bugs and worms that they find. Staff support children's mathematical awareness well. For example, children learn to identify numbers during activities, and join in with matching games and number songs. Children develop their creativity through a variety of activities, such as music, craft and imaginative play.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Children learn to be independent and follow the well-established routines. For instance, they know to wash their hands before eating and after feeding animals. Staff praise children appropriately and children take pride in their achievements. Children gain confidence as they make choices in their play. They develop a good awareness of keeping themselves safe, for instance, as they practise the evacuation drill. Staff provide children with opportunities to explore their feelings. For example, they use props effectively and children cuddle the panda puppet that staff use as they help them learn about different feelings and emotions.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
All children make good progress. They explore confidently and are willing to try things for themselves. Children develop good personal skills. They learn to respect others, for example, as they take turns during activities. They develop an awareness of familiar print, and older children recognise their names. Children gain the key skills they need to prepare them well for future learning and school.
