This provision is good

 The childminder reflects on her practice and the quality of her provision. She undertakes training to improve her skills so that she can support children's learning more effectively.  The childminder has a good understanding of how children learn and develop. She knows each child well and plans effectively for the next steps in their learning.  The childminder provides a stimulating and welcoming environment. Children are happy, secure and form caring relationships with the childminder.  The childminder observes children to find out about what they know and what they can do. She plans interesting and challenging activities, which children enjoy exploring.  The childminder provides a stimulating outdoor area, where children learn and play. For example they grow a wide range of fruits and vegetables, which encourages them to try new tastes and textures.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always recognise when children need more time to think through their ideas and respond to questions.  Daily routines do not always allow children sufficient time to explore activities to the full.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 provide more consistency when allowing children time to think through their ideas and answer questions  review the organisation of daily routines, to allow children more time to bring their activities to a close before moving on to something new.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector looked around the areas used for childminding.  The inspector observed a range of play activities and care routines, and spoke to the childminder about the children's learning and development.  The inspector looked at a sample of documents, including registers of attendance, policies and procedures, parents' comments and children's assessment records.  The inspector held discussions with the childminder about the systems she uses to observe children, monitor their development and plan for the next steps in their learning.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder is aware of the signs which may cause concern for a child's welfare and knows how to report concerns to the relevant professionals. The childminder understands the importance of working in partnership with parents to support children's care and learning. She effectively shares information with parents about children's daily learning and care routines. The childminder is committed to improving her practice and the quality of her provision. She reflects on her practice and updates her knowledge and skills through regular training. This helps her to support children more effectively.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The play areas are well organised. Children have space to explore a range of activities independently. The childminder teaches the children well and uses their choice of activities to enhance their learning. For example, as children play with building blocks, she names the colours and encourages children to count the blocks and compare their sizes. This helps to support their mathematical development. Children enjoy using their senses to explore resources. For example, they take pleasure in smelling different herbs in the garden. Indoors, they explore a tray of flour and pasta using their hands and feet.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder helps children to learn about healthy food choices. For example, she provides nutritious, home-cooked foods and encourages them to try new tastes and textures. The children are happy and self-assured in the childminder's care. They confidently make their needs known and she responds to them with kindness and enthusiasm, helping them to feel safe and valued. Children's behaviour is good. The childminder helps them to understand rules and to treat others respectfully. For example, she encourages children to share the bricks during a construction activity and explains why they need to use resources carefully.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress from their starting points. They develop the skills they need for the next stages in their learning. For example, younger children learn personal skills, such as how to dress and feed themselves, while older children make marks in flour, paint and sand, in preparation for writing. The children respond well to the praise and encouragement that they receive and they become confident and independent learners.
