This provision is good

 Children demonstrate good levels of confidence and independence. They willingly attempt new skills under the effective support and guidance of the childminder.  The childminder offers a welcoming home environment for children. They choose from a good range of accessible resources for indoor and outdoor play.  Children make good progress as they participate in a wide range of stimulating activities. The childminder monitors children's progress effectively and shares this information regularly with parents.  Children build strong emotional attachments with the childminder and she supports their care needs particularly well and in a sensitive manner.  The childminder has highly effective systems to evaluate her practice, taking on board the comments and views of children, parents, and other early years professionals.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not consistently extend activities and respond to spontaneous learning opportunities.  Although the childminder talks to children about healthy lifestyles, she does not encourage healthy eating as well as she might.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 develop teaching methods even further to take advantage of spontaneous learning opportunities  think of more ways to encourage children to follow a healthy diet.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed children in their play, inside and outside, and during their interactions with the childminder.  The inspector completed a joint observation with the childminder.  The inspector took into account the written views of parents.  The inspector spoke with the childminder and children at appropriate times throughout the visit.  The inspector sampled documentation, including children's learning journals and the childminder's policies and qualifications.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a secure knowledge of the procedures to follow if she has any concerns about a child's welfare. She has a commitment to professional development, sourcing additional training to further develop her knowledge. For example, she has recently attended government safeguarding training. The childminder encourages children to contribute to the evaluation of her practice. For example, she helps them to complete 'Two Stars and a Wish' forms, where they record two things that they like and one area that they would like to see improved. Partnership with parents is good. The childminder gains information from parents about what their children know and can do, to help her build on their learning at home.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder closely observes children's learning and uses the information to plan activities that interest them. She places strong emphasis on developing children's independence. For example, children unpack their bags, hang up their coats and put their lunch boxes in the fridge. The childminder gives children the confidence to 'have a go' by providing support and praise. For example, she shows children how to buckle up their shoes and acknowledges their achievements. Children's understanding of the natural world is particularly strong. For example, they are captivated as they look at the chickens and handle the eggs. They comment that the eggs are warm and the childminder explains that this is because they have just been laid. Children enjoy physical activities. For example, they use tools to dig in soil and plant seedlings. Teaching methods are good. The childminder uses both instruction and demonstration. Children learn that the roots need to

be planted in the soil with the plant facing towards the sun to promote growth. The childminder places a clear focus on increasing children's vocabulary. For example, she introduces new words, such as 'nutrients' and 'nurture'.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder is responsive to children's changing needs, recognising when they are hungry or need nappy changes. She has positive relationships with the children, who are happy and secure in her care. The childminder helps children to establish the skills they need to keep themselves safe. For example, she reminds them to point scissors downwards when walking with them.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress and show enthusiasm for learning. They develop key skills for starting school, such as writing their name, listening to others and following instructions. Children take care of their belongings, behave well and show kindness to others.
