p.1
This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:
The range of activities currently provided is not broad enough to ensure that all children have opportunities to become actively engaged, particularly for the younger children attending. Children's opportunities to develop their independence and self-help skills are sometimes limited, particularly at snack times.
p.1
It has the following strengths
The staff team have improved their knowledge of safeguarding practice through training. They understand their responsibilities with regard to keeping children safe. Staff deploy themselves effectively so that children can use all areas safely under supervision. Relationships with parents and other settings are positive and help the setting to get to know the children they care for. Parents value the service and comment that they feel staff support the children well.

What the setting needs to do to improve further
To meet the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage the provider must:

Inspection activities
The inspector observed activities indoors and outdoors. The inspector sampled relevant documentation, including Disclosure and Barring Service checks, risk assessments and staff files. The inspector discussed childcare practices with the provider and staff, and spoke to children throughout the inspection. The inspector took account of parents' views spoken to on the day of the inspection.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement
The provider has a generally suitable understanding of the safeguarding and welfare requirements. Systems to review and self-evaluate the service are not yet fully embedded, though the provider has taken some positive steps to make improvements since the last inspection. Supervision has been implemented for staff and there has been some delegation of tasks. The provider recognises the benefits of this and as a result, staff have been able to take on more responsibilities and develop their practice. Most staff have first aid qualifications and those that do not are due to complete a course. Safeguarding is effective. All staff have attended safeguarding training and recognise their responsibilities with regard to child protection or well-being concerns. Children are kept safe because there are clear systems in place for risk assessment. Appropriate recruitment procedures make sure that staff are suitable to work with children.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement
Children appear happy and settled at the group. There is a relaxed atmosphere after a busy school day. Staff form positive links with parents and exchange some helpful information. This enables them to work together to meet children's needs. Although there are some resources for children to engage in, such as small construction toys and cars, staff do not plan effectively to ensure there are enough activities to engage all children. Staff do not consistently promote children's independence and self-help skills. For example, children have choices at snack times about what they want to eat, but are not given opportunities to become involved in the preparation of their snacks or to serve themselves.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement
Children understand the rules of the setting and have formed positive relationships with staff and their friends, which shows that children feel secure in their environment. However, behaviour sometimes deteriorates because there are not enough activities available to them to sustain their interest. This can be seen when children roll around the floor in a quilt that has been laid out in the book area. Children enjoy the company of their peers and friends when they sit together socially at snack times. They show good manners when they are polite in making requests. There are opportunities for children to have access to outdoor play in the park directly opposite the setting, though children indicate that this is not a daily occurrence.
