This provision is good

 The childminder follows the children's lead during activities and encourages them to make choices. She takes account of their views sensitively; for example, she knows when they are ready to move on to another activity. Children enjoy their time at the setting, which has a positive effect on their learning and development.  Children develop their physical skills well as they play; for example, they scoop sand with a spade and fill a bucket. The childminder motivates them to explore in different ways; for instance, she shows them how to pour sand through a sieve.  The childminder works in close partnerships with parents to settle children in when they start at the setting. Children build confidence and develop trusting relationships with the childminder. This helps to promote their emotional well-being.  The childminder has made good progress towards addressing the recommendations raised in the previous inspection; for example, she develops clear next steps in

children's learning to help them make the best possible progress.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always make best use of play opportunities to promote children's imagination, for example, to act out their observations of the real world.  Children do not benefit from a broad enough range of activities to help develop their understanding of the wider world.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 increase opportunities for children to develop their imagination in play  strengthen opportunities for children to learn about the wider world.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed children and their interactions with the childminder.  The inspector carried out discussions with the childminder as appropriate.  The inspector viewed a sample of documents, including children's learning records.  The inspector discussed the childminder's partnership with parents.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of her responsibilities to protect children's welfare and refer any concerns she may have about their safety to other agencies. She reflects well on her practice and shares ideas with other childminders to help identify areas for improvement and continually strengthen the quality of the provision. The childminder completes accurate assessments of children's development and monitors their progress regularly to help identify any gaps in their learning. This helps her to plan precisely and to support children's progress towards next stages in their learning. She has developed procedures to share information with parents on an ongoing basis. This helps to promote continuity in children's learning and care as they move between settings.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder has a secure understanding of how to promote children's early communication skills, for example, she describes what they do, models language and sings to them. She uses her training, knowledge and skills effectively to help promote young children's early language development, such as using signs alongside speech to help support their understanding. The childminder promotes opportunities for children to explore different media and materials; for instance, children explore dry pasta with their hands and get absorbed in transferring pasta one by one into a container.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder promotes opportunities for children to learn to interact with others, for example, on their visits to local amenities. She helps them to build on their social skills; for instance, she supports them to take turns with other children as they play. The childminder is a positive role model. She is polite and friendly in her interactions with children and offers lots of praise to help encourage their efforts. Children develop positive self-esteem. The childminder works in partnership with parents to help promote children's independence. For example, she shares strategies with parents to encourage young children to learn to use cutlery at mealtimes.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children enjoy regular opportunities to play and exercise in fresh air, which helps to promote their health and well-being. They learn to take appropriate risk; for example, young children learn to go up the steps and come down the slide. They learn to keep themselves safe from harm; for instance, they learn to wheel a play buggy around, changing their path to avoid bumping into equipment and furniture. Children develop their early mathematical skills, such as learning to fit shapes into spaces to complete a puzzle. Children benefit from the childminder's good teaching methods and develop strong foundations for future learning.
