This provision is good

 The childminder has formed close bonds with the children in her care. She is warm and affectionate towards them, and this helps children to feel safe and secure in her environment.  The childminder provides activities that motivate children and that they enjoy. The resources are organised well and children independently choose what they want to play with.  Children learn about making healthy choices through effective daily routines. For example, the childminder prepares healthy meals and snacks, and ensures they get out daily to gain fresh air and exercise.  The childminder regularly shares details of children's progress with parents and encourages parents to share achievements from home. This promotes consistency in children's leaning between the home and the setting.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Although the childminder teaches children about the world around them, they do not have many opportunities to investigate and learn more about the natural world.  The childminder's professional development plan does not always target precise areas to maintain consistently high-quality teaching and learning experiences that help children make the best possible progress.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 develop more ways for children to investigate nature, to support their understanding of the world further  extend the plan for professional development so that it is targeted to improve the quality of teaching and learning experiences for children across all areas.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector had discussions with the childminder relating to her practice.  The inspector looked at areas of the premises used for childminding and sampled relevant documentation.  The inspector observed the childminder's practice and the learning opportunities she provides for children.  The inspector and childminder jointly observed children at play.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a clear understanding of her role and responsibilities to promote children's welfare. This includes how to respond in the event of a child protection concern. The childminder completes robust risk assessments of her environment and this helps children play in safety. She uses her self-evaluation effectively to focus on her strengths and priorities for improvement. For example, she plans to improve her daily communication with parents by providing photographs of their children engaged in activities. The childminder is proactive in seeking the views of the parents to feed into her evaluation. For example, parents have positive views and state, 'You work well with my child's needs and have a caring and holistic approach to their well-being'.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder uses her good teaching skills and positive interactions to keep children interested and challenged in their play. She gives particular attention to using different ways to develop children's listening and attention skills. For example, the childminder continually engages them in meaningful dialog, which encourages children to respond and echo her words. They also sing along to favourite nursey rhymes and songs. Children enjoy making playdough with the childminder. They further develop their creativity, for example, as they use a range of tools to make patterns on the playdough. The childminder carries out regular assessments of children's progress. She uses these well to identify next steps to ensure children are continually interested, challenged and are making progress in relation to their starting points.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children's behaviour is good. The childminder uses clear explanations and guidance about their actions and this helps children develop important skills for future learning and in forming relationships. The childminder praises children frequently to develop their confidence and self-esteem. Children understand how to keep themselves safe from relevant risks. For instance, the childminder reminds them not to stand on the safety gate because they might fall down.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children have good attitudes towards learning. They enjoy playing and exploring together with the childminder. They learn a good range of skills that prepare them for the next stage in their education, such as developing their early reading, writing and number- recognition abilities. Children benefit from outings away from the home. For example, they visit local toddler groups where they gain opportunities to socialise with other children of the same age.
