This provision is good

 The childminder regularly and effectively reflects on her practice to evaluate what works well and what improvements to make. She gains the views of parents and children to help her in this process and maintain her good standards. Children make good progress from their starting points. They develop key skills that prepare them well for their next steps in learning and eventual move to school.  Children have close bonds with the childminder. She offers a caring and nurturing environment, which helps build children's confidence and motivates them to explore and learn.  The childminder informs parents each day about their children's care and learning, which effectively encourages parents to continue children's learning at home.  The childminder promotes children's language skills well, for example, by engaging them in singing rhymes and songs together.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Systems to share information with all other settings children attend are not in place for all children, to ensure consistency in their care and learning.  The childminder does not always obtain detailed information from parents about children's starting points, to help her plan fully for their learning from the start.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 strengthen the sharing of information with all other settings that children attend, to promote more consistency and continuity in children's care and learning  gain more detailed information from parents about what children can do when they first start, to better inform the early planning process.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector had a tour of the premises and areas used for childminding.  The inspector examined a sample of policies, children's records and other documents.  The inspector observed children and the childminder during play and spoke with the childminder about the children's progress.  The inspector discussed self-evaluation processes with the childminder, and how she meets children's welfare needs.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has completed child protection training and understands the procedures to follow if she has concerns about a child. She carries out effective risk assessments to help her ensure children's safety. The childminder has made some good improvements since her last inspection; for example, she has improved her system to plan more precisely for children's individual learning and development. The childminder regularly shares details of her observations and assessments of children's achievement with parents. This encourages parents to extend their children's learning at home and enables the childminder to monitor children's progress carefully. The childminder meets with other childminders to share good practice. She has researched well to provide opportunities that develop children's sense of belonging and value in the childminder's home.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder knows the children well and understands the different ways they learn. She ensures that resources and activities consistently interest and engage children. The childminder is skilled at extending children's learning as they play. For example, she introduced and reinforced colours and shapes as they decorated biscuits. Children had fun exploring dough. The childminder modelled language well and introduced new words, such as 'roll', 'squash', 'flat' and 'soft', helping to extend children's emerging language skills. The childminder encourages children well to move around and be active in their play, helping them to gain control and coordination of their bodies.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder forms positive relationships with children. Children feel safe and secure in her care, which helps promote their emotional well-being effectively. Children's self- confidence increases well and the childminder uses plenty of praise and encouragement to help develop their independence. The childminder promotes children's growing self- assurance effectively and helps them to become emotionally ready for the next stages in their learning. Children learn to play cooperatively. They behave very well. Children enjoy regular outings with the childminder, which helps them to develop a secure awareness of their local community.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children engage well in their learning and persevere when developing new skills. For example, they enjoy the challenge of exploring and learning to spread icing, using great concentration to cover their biscuits. Children are confident communicators and work well with others, sharing taking turns.
