p.1

Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Requires improvement Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder has not responded in a timely way, so that Ofsted can determine the suitability of a household member who is to assist her with caring for children.  The childminder does not gather sufficient information about children's starting points to help her to plan for, and monitor, their progress. She does not assess children's progress accurately over time to identify their strengths and areas of delay across the areas of learning.  The childminder does not always ensure that she knows about children's experiences in other settings, so that she can effectively promote continuity of care and learning.  The childminder's self-evaluation is not strong enough to help her to maintain or improve the quality of the provision.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 Children benefit from a homely environment. They build secure emotional bonds with the childminder and are confident and content in her care.  The childminder has a plentiful supply of toys and equipment. These are well organised to enable children to make individual choices and develop their independence.  The childminder promotes children's physical development well. They regularly attend parks and play areas for healthy, active exercise.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage and the Childcare Register the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

 provide Ofsted with the required information so that checks can be made to ensure that people living or working on the childminder's premises are suitable to fulfil their role 27/05/2016

p.2

Due Date

 improve the assessments of children's development, including their starting points when they first attend the setting, to support precise planning and give a clear overview of the progress children make in their learning. 27/05/2016

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 strengthen the partnerships with other settings children attend to more effectively support continuity in children's care and learning  develop self-evaluation so that it effectively identifies areas for improvement and promotes good outcomes for all children.

p.2

Inspection activities

 This inspection was carried out as a result of the risk assessment process.  The inspector observed the quality of teaching and spoke to the childminder about how she plans for children's progress.  The inspector looked at the areas of the home used by children, and the resources available to children.  A range of documentation was looked at, including the childminder's training record, some policies and procedures and children's records.  The inspector took account of the views of parents through written records and emails.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

In spite of several reminders, the childminder has not provided Ofsted with the information it needs to establish whether a household member is suitable to become an assistant. The person concerned is already known to Ofsted and has no unsupervised contact with the children. This means that the risk to children is minimal. Other aspects of children's safety are promoted adequately. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder attends regular child protection training. She understands the procedures to follow if a child is at risk of abuse or neglect. She renews her first-aid certificate so that she can attend to any minor accidents. The childminder has not updated her self-evaluation to help her identify and address weaknesses in the childminding provision. The childminder shares some information about children's care needs with other providers who also care for the children. However, she does not obtain information about the progress children

make in their learning to promote a consistent approach.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

The childminder is qualified and experienced. She ensures that children are suitably occupied by plentiful resources that are easily accessible. The childminder encourages children to lead their own play and develop their independence as they choose their toys. She is aware of children's individual interests and plans some activities that engage them, such as building roadways, or playing imaginatively with a toy kitchen. However, the childminder does not gather enough information about children's learning when they first attend to identify the starting points of their development. In addition, she does not accurately assess and monitor children's ongoing progress to help her plan precisely for their learning needs and identify any gaps.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

Children's welfare is not fully assured because the childminder has not provided required information to Ofsted. The childminder ensures that children have plenty of opportunities to enjoy outdoor play experiences and develop their physical skills. She provides children with a variety of healthy snacks to broaden their understanding of which foods are good for them. Parents speak highly of the childminder. They say that the communication between them is good and that their children enjoy a variety of outings. The childminder works well with parents to settle children in to her home. She finds out about essential routines, so that their care needs are effectively met.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Overall, children are suitably prepared for the next stage of their learning. However, their development is not effectively monitored to ensure they all make good progress. Children learn independence skills, such as, washing their hands and putting on shoes and coats. They read stories with the childminder and have regular opportunities to be creative with arts and crafts. Children benefit from activities that promote their early writing, such as painting and drawing.
