Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Good 2

Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Good 2

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder does not routinely ensure that she has a first-aid kit accessible at all times.  The childminder does not understand the importance of retaining records relating to children for a reasonable period of time after they have left her care. In particular, she has not kept records of attendance, medication or any accidents or incidents that may have occurred.  The childminder does not effectively reflect on her provision to identify and address all weaknesses.  While children have opportunities for physical play outdoors each day, the childminder does not give children who prefer to learn outside sustained opportunities to do so.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 The childminder works together with parents to ensure that children's routines suit their needs for play and rest.  The childminder regularly monitors where children are in their learning. She includes information gathered from parents to support her in her assessments. The childminder provides activities that are linked to children's interests and, as a result, they enjoy joining in with them.  Children feel secure and comfortable in the childminder's care. She builds a trusting bond with them.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage and the Childcare Register the provider must:

 ensure that there is a suitably stocked first-aid kit available at all times 06/05/2016

p.2

 retain key records relating to children for a reasonable period of time after they have left the provision. 06/05/2016

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 improve processes for self-evaluation to identify all strengths and weaknesses in practice, to ensure that statutory requirements are met at all times and to set challenging goals for improvement  enhance the opportunities for children who learn best outside, enabling them to follow their preference and develop their skills more quickly.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector completed a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder.  The inspector took account of the views of parents as expressed in written testimonials.  The inspector checked evidence of the suitability of all household members and the qualifications of the childminder.  The inspector spoke with the childminder and children at appropriate times throughout the inspection.  The inspector viewed a selection of documentation, including policies and procedures and records of children's learning.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has an appropriate understanding of what to do if she is concerned about a child in her care. The qualified childminder completes training to keep herself up to date with developments in childcare. She has made some improvements to her practice since her previous inspection, including documenting the hours of attendance of children in her care. However, the childminder does not know all the requirements she must follow. She does not retain past records for a reasonable period of time after children have left. In addition, she has failed to notify Ofsted of changes to her telephone contact numbers. This has also been an issue at a previous inspection. The childminder seeks the views of parents who use her service. Parents value the flexibility that the childminder offers them. They feel their children are happy in her care.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder assesses children regularly to identify what they need to learn next to make progress in their development. She teaches children new skills and plans suitable activities. The childminder takes children on regular outings to playgroups. Children also go out to parks and play areas. This helps them to develop their large muscles. Although the childminder does not effectively evaluate the whole of her provision, she does identify some areas for improvement. For example, she recognises that some children who attend would benefit from longer and more frequent time outdoors to help to improve their learning further. The childminder promotes children's speaking skills, introduces new words and repeats what they say clearly back to them. She reads books to children that are related to their interests. Children make good progress in their speech development.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

The childminder stays close by children and regularly joins in as they play. She ensures that children enjoy their time with her. The childminder notices and responds to how they are feeling. She praises children as they play, building their confidence. Children are able to rest and sleep appropriately as they need to. The childminder has completed suitable first-aid training and is clear what she will do in certain situations. She knows when it would be necessary to seek emergency medical treatment for a child. However, should an accident occur while on an outing, she does not always have immediate access to a suitable first-aid kit. Therefore, she is not able to respond as promptly as possible using the most appropriate equipment. The childminder knows how to support parents to seek additional help for their child if it is required.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

The childminder encourages children to share resources during play-based activities. They learn to listen and develop a willingness to learn. Children have opportunities to develop their small-muscle skills. For example, they learn to use small switches to activate electronic toys. Children make good progress in their learning given their individual starting points and capabilities. They develop key skills, such as an ability to concentrate, preparing them well for school.
