This provision is good

 The childminder monitors children's progress effectively using clear observation, assessment and planning procedures. She is confident about children's stages of development and any gaps in their learning. Children make good progress from their starting points.  The childminder works effectively with other providers and professionals to support children's individual development well. Good communication systems enable the childminder to promote continuity in children's care and learning.  Children benefit from the good range of activities and resources, which interest them and support learning. The childminder uses her garden and outings well to further children's play experiences.  The childminder reflects well on her practice and involves parents in her self-evaluation process. She takes effective steps to improve her provision for children, which demonstrates a clear capacity for ongoing development.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder sometimes misses the opportunity to help children practise their early writing skills.  The childminder does not always encourage children to engage in routines that develop their social skills further and better prepare them for expectations at school.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 increase the opportunities for children to practise their early writing skills  provide more support for children to engage fully in routines, to develop their social skills further and prepare them for expectations at school.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder and children in their indoor and outdoor activities.  The inspector held discussions with the childminder.  The inspector checked required documentation, including training and insurance certificates.  The inspector read a sample of children's development records.  The inspector took account of verbal and written feedback from parents.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Since registration, the childminder has made good improvements to her garden and outdoor resources that engage children well in their learning. She undertakes relevant training to refresh and update her childcare knowledge. The childminder acts on information and support, for instance, to further develop her assessment of children's progress. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a secure knowledge of the procedures to follow that enable her to protect children's welfare. The childminder accurately identifies areas for further improvement. For example, she plans to learn basic sign language to increase her teaching skills and extend how she supports children's communication and language development.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder interacts well with the children to promote interest and support their learning. For example, she prompts colour recognition and counting as children play. Children focus well, listen carefully and are eager to contribute. For instance, they readily describe what they are making with the dough. The childminder uses outings well to support children's learning. For example, children collect pine cones in the woods and return to make a birdfeeder with them. Children enjoy the regular story times, which develops their interest in books. The childminder has frequent discussions with parents about their children. They work well together to support children's good progress.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children play well and have warm relationships with others and the childminder. They understand her expectations for good behaviour and learn how to keep safe. For example, children learn where it is safe to cross the road and what happens during a fire drill. To support their understanding of nature and eating healthy foods, the childminder engages children in planting and growing fruits and vegetables. The childminder involves children in different celebrations and events to promote their increasing awareness of diversity. Children develop a good sense of respect and responsibility, such as when they help with tasks.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children have fun with the childminder and learn through play. They enjoy their activities and are keen to take part. Children explore with interest and show fascination in their discoveries. For example, they happily look for and find insects and snails in the garden. Children are content and feel secure in the care of the childminder.
