This provision is good

 The childminder establishes good relationships with parents. She keeps them fully informed about their children's learning and shares her policies and procedures with them. This helps parents to understand the service she offers and supports them to build on their children's learning at home effectively.  Children have daily access to outdoor environments, such as exploring the garden and local parks. This helps support those children who prefer to learn outside.  The childminder observes children and tracks their development well, using this information to plan meaningful activities and provide a wide range of resources. This helps children make good progress in their learning and development.  The childminder's home is safe and welcoming and resources are easily accessible. Children are relaxed and very confident and they make independent choices about what they want to do.  The childminder promotes children's good behaviour and acts as a positive role model.

p.1

This provision is good

This helps children to be polite and well-mannered.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always make the best use of the questions she asks to extend children's thinking and learning.  The childminder does not fully encourage children to solve problems for themselves, such as what will happen when they mix their water and cornflour together.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed activities and the quality of teaching.  The inspector held discussions with the childminder at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector viewed the areas of the house used for childminding.  The inspector checked a selection of records and documentation.  The inspector observed interactions between the childminder and children throughout the inspection.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder has a positive attitude to reflecting on her practice. She seeks the views of parents, children and other professionals to help shape and develop her service further. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of how to help keep children safe from harm. She prioritises her professional development. For example, she has up-to-date knowledge of safeguarding procedures. She shares this with her assistant to help ensure they both have a secure understanding of what to do if concerned for a child's welfare. She checks her home environment every morning to help ensure that any potential risks are identified and addressed so children can play in safety.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Children can freely choose from a wide range of interesting toys and resources, and use these as they explore the environment. The childminder has high expectations of children. She provides a stimulating learning environment and is responsive to children's individual needs. She effectively plans activities to help ensure children continue to make good progress according to their individual starting points. She fully values the information parents provide, such as their children's interests, and uses this for her planning. She keeps a close check on what children can do and focuses well on areas where they require extra support. Children learn about healthy lifestyles, such as during their daily routine. For example, the childminder follows good hygiene practice and provides healthy snacks and meals.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder is a positive role model who develops good bonds with children. Younger children seek comfort and reassurance from her, and this helps build their emotional security and confidence in the environment. Younger children learn how they can take an active role in their care routines and how to keep themselves safe. For example, they help tidy up and collect their shoes before going outdoors. She treats children with great sensitivity and respect, helping them to share, take turns and to consider others. Children behave well. They enjoy visits to local playgroups and they form positive relationships with other children and adults in the community. They learn about diversity and difference, such as through the activities, resources and discussions she has with them.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

All children are gaining the skills they need for the next stage in their learning and in readiness for school. They are confident, sociable, excitedly join in activities and enjoy their learning. They make good progress in their personal, social and emotional, communication and language, and physical development. They have a positive sense of themselves and demonstrate good levels of self-control in relation to their age.
