For example, her positive encouragement supports children's confidence to count objects accurately and

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always provide opportunities for older children to practise their early writing skills in preparation for their move to school.  The childminder questions children well as they play. However, she does not always give them enough time to respond and develop their ideas.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

 develop further opportunities for older children to practise their early writing skills  provide children with more opportunities to answer questions and develop their ideas and critical thinking.

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching as children played inside.  The inspector considered the written views of parents.  The inspector spoke with the childminder about her understanding of the early years foundation stage requirements.  The inspector sampled documentation, including the childminder's self-evaluation, children's assessment records, and policies and procedures.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a secure knowledge of child protection procedures and her responsibility to report any concerns about a child's welfare. She rigorously implements her policies and procedures to help her keep children safe. The childminder has developed strong partnerships with other early years settings children attend. In particular, this supports children's emotional well-being as they move between settings. The childminder talks regularly to other professionals to guide her practice and share ideas. She monitors children's progress effectively to ensure that she promptly identifies any gaps in learning. She keeps parents well informed of their children's achievements and provides ideas to support learning at home.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder gains good information from parents when children first start, to help her plan targeted activities. She supports children well in their learning and they confidently participate in games. The childminder makes good use of these opportunities to progress children's language skills. For example, as children select shopping for their trolley, the childminder talks to them about what they like to eat and healthy options. The childminder supports children well with construction bricks. As they build, older children create stories and use different sounds and voices for their characters, developing their imaginations well.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder provides a homely and inviting environment. There is a good range of resources for children to make independent choices about their play. The childminder praises and encourages children's efforts, which helps them to gain good self-esteem and confidence in their abilities. Children show pride in their achievements, for example, when they combine paint to make a new colour. The childminder provides good opportunities for children to learn about healthy lifestyles. There are regular opportunities for children to be outside and active. Children learn hygienic practices, such as washing their hands before they eat. They are aware of their own needs, for example, they tell the childminder when they need to use the toilet, and help themselves to drinks when they are thirsty.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children gain the skills they need for their next steps in learning. They develop good independent skills such as finding and putting on their shoes. They are good communicators and engage in discussions well. Children have good mathematical knowledge. They confidently count and use mathematical language well to compare size.
