Inspection activities

 The inspector and the childminder discussed the systems used to observe and record the children's progress, and the documents used to support the childminder's work.  The inspector completed observations of the children engaged in activities with the childminder.  The inspector sampled written feedback from parents which was made available during the inspection.  The inspector looked at the rooms and resources used by the children.  The inspector and the childminder discussed the childminder's systems of self- evaluation and the impact of training on her work.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has recently attended relevant training and knows the procedures to follow if she has any child protection concerns. The childminder is dedicated to her work and to making continuing improvement to her service. For example, she attends training and updates her professional knowledge by reading and research. She makes good use of her improving knowledge and skills to sharpen her teaching and care practices. The childminder knows the children exceptionally well. She observes and assesses their progress thoroughly and uses this information to plan activities that motivate them to learn and make good progress.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Children enjoy their play and learning, and benefit from the childminder's good quality interaction. For example, as they play a large floor game, the childminder successfully builds on their interest to help them to understand numbers and sequences. The children laugh and count as they throw the large dice, confidently counting the dots and the spaces to move. They learn how to share and take turns as they move their counters. Children have good opportunities to make their own choices and lead their own play. They develop high levels of self-confidence and are prepared well for their future learning. Children develop wonderful imaginations and make good use of a broad range of resources to support their pretend play. For example, they use a tent as a hospital, working together to make their dogs better. Children show very caring attitudes as they talk to each other about their dogs and the treatment needed.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are outstanding

The childminder knows the children very well and is exceedingly sensitive to their needs. She is exceptionally kind and thoughtful, and children develop superb confidence in her care. They are secure, happy and ready to play, explore and learn. Children make informed choices about their play. The childminder skilfully identifies when to observe children and let them make their own decisions. She encourages children to take carefully managed risks and helps them to understand how to keep safe. For example, children know that by tidying away toys they are reducing any tripping hazards. The children learn how to care for themselves and develop high levels of independence. For example, they know how to wash their hands and how it helps to promote their good health.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children all make good progress, especially in their understanding of numbers. For example, they use their knowledge of mathematics to work out how to share a cake out equally. Children are confident and self-assured. They develop useful skills for their future learning and subsequent move to school.
