This provision is good

 The childminder has made steady progress to improve her practice and provision since the last inspection. She has worked effectively with the local authority to develop her understanding of the early years foundation stage. Her teaching and procedures for safeguarding children have been strengthened. All legal requirements are fully met.  The childminder gives children plenty of praise and encouragement. She interacts very positively with children at their level. This helps them to behave well and supports the development of their good self-esteem and confidence.  The childminder promotes children's language development through her supportive interactions during daily routines and play activities. She talks with children about what they are doing, questioning them effectively and giving time for them to respond.  The childminder knows the children well and understands where they are in their development. She generally makes effective use of the information gained from

observations to support children's successful learning.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always use assessment findings to plan very precisely for individuals so that every child is highly challenged and makes more rapid progress in all aspects of their learning.  The childminder provides a wide range of resources, the majority of which are stored out of reach of children. As a result, opportunities for younger children to make decisions about the direction of their play are less well promoted.  The childminder has not used highly focused professional development to develop an expert knowledge of how children learn and further improve the quality of teaching.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 make better use of assessments to plan more precisely and ensure all children are highly challenged, in order to promote their rapid progress and achievement in all aspects of their learning  improve opportunities for younger children to independently select toys and resources for themselves, in order to sustain their interest and involvement in a broad range of activities  strengthen professional development that focuses more specifically on opportunities to deepen the understanding of how children learn, in order to further improve the quality of teaching.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector took into account the written views of parents and carers provided on the day.  The inspector sampled a range of documentation, including attendance records, suitability checks, the self-assessment information and children's observation, assessment and planning records.  The inspector held discussions with the childminder and spoke with children at appropriate times throughout the inspection.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has completed training in safeguarding to improve her knowledge of child protection. She has developed her safeguarding policy and procedure. This now includes her policy about the safe use of mobile phones and cameras. The childminder demonstrates a clear understanding of the possible signs of abuse and neglect. The childminder spends time considering what she does well and identifies some areas of weakness. This has helped her to improve the quality of her provision to benefit children.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder uses her skills, knowledge and experience well. Children benefit from a good balance of child-initiated and adult-led activities. They particularly enjoy exploring their natural environment and learning about different plants, insects and animals. Children demonstrate a love of books and listen attentively to stories. They enjoy positive interaction, praise and encouragement from the childminder which boosts their confidence and self-esteem. The childminder follows children's lead and uses sensitive interactions to extend their learning. This encourages them to concentrate well and follow instructions carefully. The childminder talks with parents about their child's day and the activities they have been involved in. This supports parents to be aware of the skills that their children are learning and developing with the childminder and to continue children's learning at home.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are self-assured and happy. They develop strong affectionate bonds with the childminder who is kind and responsive to their needs. Her good practice helps to provide them with the emotional security required to explore and learn successfully. The childminder promotes children's good health. Children benefit from fresh air and daily exercise as they walk to and from activities. They are provided with nutritious meals and are encouraged to choose from a healthy choice of snacks. Children learn how to work together and consider the views of others. They have the opportunity to meet other children and adults through regular outings into the community. The childminder teaches children how to manage their own safety. They take part in fire evacuation drills and learn how to cross the road safely.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress in their learning from their starting points. They work comfortably within the range of development typical for their age. Children develop a positive attitude and are motivated to learn. They show fascination and remain engaged in activities for a significant period of time. They make good progress in developing communication and literacy skills, including early reading and writing. They develop their control in holding pencils, glue sticks and other mark-making tools effectively. Children are independent, inquisitive and acquire important skills that prepare them well for the next stage in their learning.
