Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder has an effective understanding of her responsibilities. She ensures that she is up to date in relation to new legislation and secures her knowledge of this through training and research. The childminder is proactive in sourcing purposeful training. For example, she explains that she is about to re-take food and safety training to update her awareness, particularly as she enjoys helping children learn to cook. The childminder evaluates her practice well and values the views of the local authority support worker and of parents. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of child protection matters. Parents praise the care that their children receive, the flexible care arrangements, and the support they receive from the childminder.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder has good teaching skills. She is sensitive to children's individual needs and successfully builds their confidence. She is enthusiastic in how she joins in their play and promotes their speech and communication well. For example, as children play with sand, she hides coins and encourages them to find and count the 'treasure'. She uses a range of terms to help children develop their vocabulary and put language into context. The childminder makes regular observations of children's achievements. She is currently only caring for children attending after the school day, and has established effective partnerships with school teachers. For example, they change out of their uniform into other clothes and understand the importance of hygiene routines, such as hand washing. Children have regular opportunities to be outdoors, either in the garden or at local parks. Children state that they thoroughly enjoy the healthy and nutritious meals provided for them.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children enjoy their time with the childminder. They are eager to play and are motivated to learn. For example, children have fun and enjoy games together. They relate well to each other. They extend activities using their own ideas, for example, during play with construction figures and cardboard boxes. Children like to create with sand. They demonstrate good physical skills as they follow the childminder's instructions to make 'small' or 'bigger' sandcastles. Children make good progress and are ready for the next stages of their learning.
