This provision is good
Children make good progress and develop the skills they need for future learning. They are motivated, eager to join in activities and approach their play with enthusiasm. The childminder takes positive steps to evaluate her effectiveness and to make improvements. She seeks the views of parents through questionnaires and receives complimentary feedback about the care she provides. Children benefit from the good partnerships between the childminder and parents. Effective communication results in their being a consistent approach to children's care and learning. Children form secure and caring attachments with the childminder and her assistant. They receive frequent praise and encouragement, which helps to effectively promote their confidence and self-esteem. Children's physical needs are met well. They enjoy nutritious meals and snacks, and have plenty of opportunities to play energetically outdoors in the fresh air.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder does not always support children as effectively as possible to learn the correct pronunciation of words. Activities for mixed groups of children are not always planned effectively so that the younger children are fully included.

Inspection activities
The inspector observed children's play in the childminder's house and garden. The inspector spoke to the childminder and her assistant at appropriate times during the inspection. The inspector looked at a selection of policies and children's records. The inspector completed a joint observation with the childminder. The inspector took account of the views of parents.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The childminder and her assistant have a good knowledge of how children learn and develop. They attend regular training and work closely with local authority advisors to improve their teaching. This has helped them to remain up to date with changes in legislation and to refine their procedures for establishing children's starting points. The childminder provides coaching and supervision for her assistant, and has supported her to achieve a level 3 qualification. The childminder has a good understanding of how to improve her practice. She identifies areas for development effectively so she can make changes that benefit children. Arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder and her assistant have a robust understanding of child protection issues. They know what to do should they be concerned about the welfare or safety of a child.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder uses the garden and the open space indoors to provide a range of activities that support children's physical development. Children move their bodies energetically. Younger children enjoy the challenge of stretching to reach objects on the floor or on low shelves. Babies are beginning to take first steps. The childminder provides them with low-level surfaces to support themselves as they learn to walk. The childminder develops children's mathematical and creative skills well as they play. Children explore the different textures and discover the patterns they can make when manipulating dough. The childminder encourages them to count and identify colours. Older children experiment imaginatively as they make different shapes and designs.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Children have access to a wide range of resources. These are safe, clean and age appropriate. The childminder uses clear and consistent strategies to manage behaviour and offers children explanations for why some behaviours are unwanted. Children behave well, given their age and stage of development. Children are well cared for. The childminder and her assistant are playful, warm and alert to each child's needs. Children have strong attachments with the childminder and her assistant. The childminder uses settling-in sessions effectively to get to know children and their families. This enables parents to share important information about their child's care and learning needs.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children are becoming socially, physically and emotionally ready for nursery or school. Children develop their social skills well. The childminder teaches them to mix with other children at the different toddler groups that they attend. They develop the confidence to make new friendships and learn to share and take turns. Children's early mathematical and writing skills are emerging. For example, children count during their play and make marks outside using chalks. Children are learning to be independent. They tidy toys away when they have finished playing with them.
