This provision is good

 The quality of teaching is good and the childminder has a thorough awareness of how young children learn and develop. She fully understands children's individual abilities, interests and learning needs. The childminder plans a good range of activities that children thoroughly enjoy. This is balanced with very good opportunities for child- initiated play.  Children's behaviour is very good. The childminder and her assistant are very positive role models. They speak to the children in a calm and respectful manner. Children learn to share and take turns and use good manners as they sing a please and thank you song.  Partnerships with parents work well. Parents are provided with a wealth of information about how the provision operates. They are well informed about their child's daily care routines, activities and how well they are progressing in their learning. Parents are complimentary about the provision and the progress their children make.

p.1

This provision is good

 Children's personal, social and emotional development are strong. All children are seen as unique individuals. They are treated equally and develop a good sense of belonging and emotional well-being in the welcoming and nurturing environment.  Children's health and physical development are promoted effectively. Children are cared for in a clean environment and very good hygiene procedures help to minimise the risk of cross-infection. Children enjoy healthy snacks and nutritious meals to meet their individual needs.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always obtain enough information from parents about children's starting points to help her plan their learning fully from the start.  The views of parents and children are not included in the evaluation of the provision.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 build on the range of information gained from parents about children's starting points from the outset to further support their learning and development  build on the evaluation process to accurately identify areas for further improvement, including the views of parents and children.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector looked at the areas of the premises that are used for childminding.  The inspector observed teaching and learning activities and assessed the impact they have on the children.  The inspector carried out a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder.  The inspector spoke with the childminder, her assistants and children at appropriate times throughout the inspection.  The inspector sampled a range of documentation, including evidence of the suitability of adults living and working on the premises, the childminder's qualifications, children's development records and a selection of policies and procedures.  The inspector took account of the views of parents detailed in questionnaires.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder clearly understands her role in safeguarding children and the action to take in the event of a concern. Children benefit from her commitment to keep the premises safe and secure through ongoing risk assessments. The childminder is well qualified and experienced. The childminder and her co-childminder effectively support their assistants to maintain good standards of care and learning. The childminder reviews and evaluates all aspects of the provision. She monitors the quality of teaching and learning, and the progress children make. Gaps in learning are quickly identified and planned for. The childminder and her assistants attend regular training to keep their skills and knowledge up to date.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Planning, observations and assessments work well to ensure any gaps in children's learning are identified and planned for. Children thoroughly enjoy their play and make choices about what they would like to do. Good attention is given to promoting children's speech and language skills. Older children enjoy listening to stories and are encouraged to observe the pictures and respond to questions to promote their thinking skills. Children develop good hand-to-eye coordination while playing games where they use tweezers to feed carrots to the 'hungry rabbit'. Good opportunities for mark making help children to foster their early writing skills. They enjoy using vehicles in the paint and then make tracks on the paper. Children develop good skills in counting, letter and number recognition. They use their imagination well in the role play and dressing-up area.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

All children are confident, happy and settled in the comfortable and well-resourced home environment. Babies explore a good range of age-appropriate toys in the bright and welcoming space, knowing the childminder is close by to support them. They successfully develop skills in walking and like to push and pull toys around the room. The childminder knows the children very well and she is sensitive to their individual care needs. This is an inclusive setting and partnerships with parents, local agencies and other providers work well. These ensure that children get the support they need and continuity of care and learning is successful. The childminder helps children to learn how to keep themselves safe. They talk about road safety on outings and how to use equipment in a safe way.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress in relation to their starting points. They are well prepared for nursery or school. Children eagerly join in activities. Older children listen and concentrate well. Children learn early technology skills and have good independence and self-care skills. Children learn about the needs of others and the world around them. They take part in activities about different festivals and look at pictures displayed, prompting discussions about similarities and differences.
