This provision is good

 The atmosphere in the club is calm, relaxed and welcoming. Staff establish friendly and trusting relationships with the children, which helps to support their emotional well- being.  Staff are well qualified. They organise a broad range of activities to promote children's interests. Children have fun and spend their time engaged in purposeful play.  Staff form strong links with parents and teachers from the host school. They regularly exchange information about the children, which helps to promote a shared approach to children's care and learning.  Children of all ages play well together and their behaviour is good. Parents report that staff know the children really well and have a nice rapport with the children.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Staff do not routinely provide enough opportunities for children to learn about taking some responsibility for their own safety.  Systems for performance management and ongoing professional development are not embedded well enough to help raise the quality of practice to the highest levels.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 provide more regular opportunities for children to take some responsibility to keep themselves safe  build on systems for performance management and ongoing professional development that further enhance staff practice and raise practice to a higher level.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the range of activities available and assessed the quality of interactions between staff and children.  The inspector completed a joint observation with the manager.  The inspector held a meeting with the manager. She looked at relevant documentation, such as the provider's self-evaluation and evidence of the suitability of staff working in the club.  The inspector spoke to a small selection of parents during the inspection and took account of their views.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The club is led and managed well. Managers keep in regular contact with staff to provide supervision and guidance. Arrangements for safeguarding are effective. Safe recruitment procedures are in place and ongoing suitability checks are carried out. These contribute to ensuring staff are suitable for their role. Staff assess and minimise risks to keep children safe. All staff have attended safeguarding training. They are clear about child protection procedures and know how to respond to concerns about children's welfare. Records to promote the safe management of the club are well organised and easily accessible. Self- evaluation is effective and includes the views of parents and children. This helps to identify and drive improvements.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Staff give children space and time to play independently and make their own choices. They consult with children and seek their ideas for activities. This helps to foster a strong sense of belonging and ensures activities are planned to meet children's needs and interests. Children have relaxed and friendly conversations with staff about things that interest them. This helps children to develop their communication skills. Staff maintain strong links with the Reception teacher from the host school. They exchange important messages, which staff relay to parents on collection. They also discuss ways that staff can complement children's learning in school, for example, by supporting children's literacy skills. This helps to promote consistency in children's care and learning. Children enjoy sensory experiences, such as playing with the water beads. They engage in interesting craft activities. For example, they create their own tooth fairy pouch using walnut shells

and glitter. Children feel confident to offer their suggestions for future activities. For example, they discuss their involvement in different cultural activities and ask staff if they can have a Japanese day.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are happy and comfortable in the club and they enjoy playing with their friends. They report that staff make them feel safe and say, 'All the toys and games make the time go quick'. All staff are trained in first aid and basic food hygiene, which helps to safeguard children's health and well-being. Children manage their own personal hygiene needs as they visit the bathroom independently. When children cannot play outside due to bad weather, staff make sure equipment is set out to encourage children's active play. Staff have improved snack time routines, so that children are more involved in doing tasks for themselves. This has increased children's choice and independence. Staff demonstrate a gentle and patient approach towards the children. They offer praise and encouragement to help children develop their confidence and feel good about their achievements. Positive reward systems, such as 'star of the month', also help to promote positive behaviour in
