This provision is good

 The provider and staff effectively implement policies and procedures that promote children's health, safety and well-being.  Staff plan activities that are tailored to children's individual learning needs, to help ensure children make good progress.  Children have valuable opportunities to take part in activities that promote their creative and imaginative skills.  The provider uses effective methods to identify staff's training needs, to support their professional development and increase their expertise, to help continuously improve the provision for children.  Staff keep parents well informed and support them well in continuing children's learning at home.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 At times, staff miss opportunities to further challenge and develop children's mathematical ideas, and their skills in solving problems, even more fully.  Children do not have as many opportunities as possible to learn about the similarities and differences between themselves and others, to further develop their understanding and their respect for diversity.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

 make the most of all opportunities to develop children's problem-solving skills, to deepen their mathematical understanding and give them even more confidence in using mathematics  increase opportunities for children to develop their awareness of similarities and differences between themselves and others, to support them to gain an even deeper understanding and respect for diversity.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the staff's interaction with children during indoor and outdoor activities.  The inspector had discussions with the provider about the management of the pre- school and spoke to staff at appropriate times.  The inspector carried out a joint observation with the provider.  The inspector viewed a range of documentation, including staff records, policies and children's assessment records.  The inspector spoke to parents to find out their views about the pre-school.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The provider carries out checks on staff to ensure that only those who are suitable to work with children do so. The provider and staff have a secure understanding of child protection issues and know what actions to take if they have concerns about the welfare of a child. Staff carry out regular risk assessments to minimise hazards to children. The provider has addressed the actions and recommendations set at the previous inspection. This has led to improvements in staff's professional development, the quality of learning for children, and in maintaining the cleanliness of the premises. The provider is committed to continuous improvements and takes account of the views of staff and parents to help make decisions about ways to improve. Staff work well with parents and external agencies to support children who have special educational needs and those who are learning English as an additional language. Staff share information with parents

well, to keep them up to date with their children's progress and help them in supporting their learning at home.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The provider regularly monitors children's progress through effective tracking, to help identify and close any gaps in their learning. Staff routinely observe children in their play and make accurate assessments of children's abilities. All children develop good communication and language skills. Young children are learning to join in with conversation with adults and children. Older children are learning to listen to others and take turns when speaking in a group situation. Children are curious and active learners. For example, they enjoy spending time looking for bugs and they concentrate well as they experiment with a range of materials, including sand and water.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Staff work closely with parents to fully support children's move from home to the pre- school. Children settle quickly and form trusting relationships with their key persons. Staff use appropriate behaviour management strategies and children respond well. For example, children help in deciding rules and they learn important social skills, which supports their understanding of good behaviour. Children play in a clean environment where they learn to follow good hygiene practices. Children enjoy healthy foods and take part in daily activities that help to develop their physical skills.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

All children, including children who have special educational needs and those who are learning English as an additional language, make good progress in all areas of their development. Children have regular opportunities to explore early reading and writing skills. Children develop good social skills and learn to play cooperatively together. They enjoy a wide range of experiences that help to prepare them for the next stage in their learning and for school.
