p.1

This provision is inadequate

 Children's safety is significantly compromised, as the childminder does not conduct sufficiently robust risk assessments to ensure that potential hazards are removed and children are safe in her provision.  The childminder does not consistently focus on children's individual next steps in learning during the daily activities. This means some children are not challenged to make good rates of progress in all areas of their learning and development. Planning is broad and does not link to children's individual next steps in learning.  The childminder is not working effectively with her assistants to support children's ongoing learning.  The childminder does not provide parents with sufficiently detailed or regular information about their children's progress to help them to guide their learning at home.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 The childminder and her team are skilful in promoting children's personal and social skills. Children settle well and form positive relationships with others.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage and the Childcare Register the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

 take all necessary measures to ensure that the premises and equipment are safe and suitable for childcare, particularly with regard to low-level windows 09/05/2016

p.2

Due Date

 improve procedures to check children's progress in their learning, and use this information to plan activities that support them in making good progress 09/08/2016

p.2

Due Date

 provide assistants with effective support, training and coaching to ensure they are equipped with the skills to observe children's progress, make assessments and plan effectively for children's next stage of learning. 09/08/2016

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 give parents enough information and the support they need to successfully guide their children's learning at home.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector viewed all areas of the home used for childminding and the toys and resources available.  The inspector looked at children's assessment records, planning documentation and a range of other documentation, including policies and procedures. She discussed the childminder's self-evaluation document.  The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector checked evidence of the suitability and qualifications of adults living and working on the premises.  The inspector looked at the results of an online survey completed by parents and took account of their views.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is inadequate

The childminder has not maintained the outstanding quality of this provision. Arrangements for safeguarding are not effective. Children are at risk of significant harm. This is because the childminder has failed to identify and remove or minimise risks to children's safety. Nevertheless, the childminder and her team know the possible signs of abuse and what action to take in the event of any concerns about a child in their care. The childminder has systems in place to enable her assistants to discuss any concerns they may have about their key children. However, she does not guide her assistants well enough to ensure that they understand how to extend children's learning effectively.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

The childminder and her team observe children's learning. However, these observations are not regular enough and the childminder does not always use the information gained to identify where children are achieving and what they need to learn next. Planned activities and resources provided reflect children's likes and interests but they are not based on individual children's next stage of learning. Nevertheless, children are curious, engaged and motivated to learn. The childminder's assistants use their good questioning skills to promote children's communication and thinking skills. Children use their imagination as they pretend to make a cup of tea for adults during sand play. Parents receive some information about their child's day at the setting. For example, a small chalkboard on the entry door informs parents of the daily menu and, 'What we have done today'. However, they do not receive enough information to help them to continue their children's learning

at home. A survey of parents carried out online indicated that a high number of parents wanted to know more about their child's learning and development.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are inadequate

Children's safety is not assured. The childminder leaves children unattended upstairs at sleep time. While some children sleep in cots, others do not and can easily gain access to a nearby window. The low-level window is fastened by a single casement fastner, which can be lifted easily. The window can then be pushed fully open. This presents a significant risk to children's safety. The childminder helps children to experience a smooth move from home into her care. She provides regular praise and encouragement, which promotes children's self-esteem and helps them to develop a 'try again' attitude. The childminder and her team are kind and caring and the children develop strong bonds with them. Children enjoy and benefit from daily fresh air and exercise during their visits to the local parks.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Some children do not make good enough progress. The childminder does not always use observations of children's learning to inform her planning so that she and her assistants are clear about their next stage of learning. This means that they are not well prepared for the next stage of their learning and for school. Children understand and follow simple instructions and help to keep the play spaces tidy. They are developing their self-care skills as they learn to dress and to be independent.
