This provision is good

 The childminder completes detailed risk assessments, helping her to provide an environment where children can play in safety.  The childminder works closely with parents to review her practice and successfully uses the information she gains to help shape the service she provides.  The childminder teaches children about different festivals and celebrations from around the world. She promotes their awareness of equality and diversity successfully.  The childminder promotes children's self-esteem and confidence and encourages their positive behaviour. Children behave well.  The childminder teaches children about their own safety. They learn how to keep themselves safe, such as in the event of an emergency. For example, they regularly practise the fire drill.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not provide many opportunities to extend children's mathematical skills further. For example, she does not make the most of play opportunities to extend children's understanding of numbers, such as during hopscotch, as they only name the numbers as they hop and do not see the numerals.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 extend children's understanding of mathematical ideas and language further during their play.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed children playing in the play area and garden.  The inspector spoke with the childminder at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector reviewed documents, including risk assessments, policies and procedures.  The inspector reviewed the feedback from parents' questionnaires.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a clear understanding of current practice. She is fully aware of the reporting procedures to follow if she has any concerns about a child's welfare. The childminder continually develops her knowledge, such as through attending regular training and reviewing relevant documentation and guidance. She uses what she learns to successfully help her adapt her planning to progress children in their learning and development. The childminder works closely with parents to share their children's stages of development and next steps of learning. This helps to develop good continuity of care for children.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder completes good-quality assessments. She uses these to successfully help plan activities to develop and extend children's learning. She gathers assessments from other settings children attend, which helps her to see a bigger picture of children's overall learning. She successfully tracks children's progress, helping her to identify any areas that require extra support. She effectively uses all of the information she gathers to close any gaps in children's learning. The childminder provides a good range of activities. For example, she hides letters in the sand and when children find each letter, she encourages them to sound it out. The childminder then extends this as she asks children what other words begin with that letter. This effectively helps children to develop their literacy skills.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder helps to increase children's awareness about healthy lifestyles, such as the importance of healthy eating and exercise. For example, she encourages children to regularly drink water during warm weather. Children learn how to keep themselves safe in the sun, for example, by wearing hats and sun cream. The childminder successfully encourages children's independence skills. For example, they are aware of why they need to wash their hands, such as after using the bathroom or between messy activities. This effectively helps to promote their awareness of good health and their emotional and physical well-being.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress from their starting points. They are gaining the skills they need in readiness for the next stage in their learning and school. For example, children learn how to write their names and form other letters. Children enjoy a wide range of resources that helps to promote their physical development. For example, they enjoy throwing bean bags into different areas to practice their hand-to-eye coordination. They then count these with the childminder as they throw them.
