encourage children's understanding of living things and growth.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always fully promote children's language development, particularly with regards to their vocabulary. She occasionally uses familiar terms, or children's own words, rather than repeating the correct version back to them.  The childminder does not always make the most of opportunities that arise to extend younger children's understanding of the world.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder organises her home effectively to meet children's welfare and learning needs. She completes detailed risk assessments and provides a safe environment for children. The childminder teaches children about staying safe and how to behave in situations such as an emergency in the home. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of child protection issues and the procedures to follow if she has concerns about a child's welfare. The childminder continues to develop her knowledge about children's learning, for example, by attending training.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder has a good understanding of how children learn. She provides a good range of play equipment that children can select independently and extend their own play and learning. For example, children enjoy using their imaginations as they pretend to prepare food, and care for toy dogs. In the garden, they move around confidently steering wheeled vehicles, transferring water and making marks with chalks. The childminder encourages children's mathematical development, for example, she teaches them to count and refers to shape names during play and everyday routines. The childminder provides good opportunities for children to learn about the world around them. For example, she regularly takes children on outings in the community where they learn about nature and meet other people.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are happy and settled. The childminder requests detailed information from parents about children's individual needs to help them settle and feel secure. Children learn how to treat others and understand the consequences of their actions towards one another. The childminder regularly praises children, helping to boost their self-esteem and confidence. The childminder promotes healthy lifestyles well. For example, she teaches children good routines for caring for their bodies and provides healthy food options at mealtimes. Children enjoy fresh air and exercise every day.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress from their starting points. They develop confidence in relating to other children and adults. Children make choices and feel secure to make their needs known. They show an interest in numbers and words. Children develop good independence, such as managing their own clothes and using the toilet. Skills such as these help all children to prepare well for the next stage of learning and starting school.
