This provision is good

 A good understanding of the Early Years Foundation Stage requirements enables the childminder to check carefully on the progress of children. She uses this information to plan meaningful activities that support children's good progress in nearly all areas of their learning.  The childminder teaches well. She speaks and listens to the children carefully, for example, in conversations with children to guide and develop their communication skills effectively.  The childminder is a very kind, calm and caring person. This provides a secure foundation for children to develop emotionally and to feel settled. Children's behaviour is excellent. For example, children play very well together and develop good social skills and manners.  The childminder is aware of the importance of keeping her knowledge up to date. For example, she identifies and attends training to help develop her skills further.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder misses some opportunities to strengthen children's mathematical understanding and skills when taking part in everyday routines.  The childminder does not link effectively with all other early years settings children attend, to share information to help to support children's learning.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 strengthen children's understanding of mathematical concepts and skills to aid their learning  develop links with other early years settings that children also attend, to help provide greater consistency in supporting their learning.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder and the children interacting during play activities.  The inspector spoke with the childminder, at appropriate times throughout the inspection, regarding her practice and the arrangements for observation, assessment and planning.  The inspector checked the documentation that the childminder uses to support her practices.  The inspector read and discussed the childminder's self-evaluation.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of how to keep children safe and is aware of the reporting procedures to follow if she is concerned about a child's welfare. She checks her home effectively for hazards and minimises risks to ensure children play in safe environments. The childminder knows the children well and regularly checks on their progress. For example, she completes observations and written summaries of children's development to assess their learning. This helps her to identify any gaps in learning and plan individual activities for those children who may need extra support in their learning.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder typically promotes children's learning and development well. She makes effective use of the stimulating environment and resources to promote children's next stage in learning. The childminder supports children's literacy development well. For example, she encourages children to 'have a go' at writing their names and provides name cards for them to see and copy the letters. The childminder supports children's interests and encourages their imagination to develop further. For example, following a visit to a caf, the children then acted out their experiences by making their own caf and pretending to be the customers and shop owner.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder works closely with parents when they first arrive to gather information about the children's starting points. She then regularly lets parents know about their children's day and their achievements. Children learn to be independent and they develop good social skills from a young age. For example, they are very involved in mealtimes as they take turns to make their own sandwiches and make decisions about the fillings they would like. Children benefit from regular outdoor experiences and exercise. For example, they visit different places in the local community that encourage children to raise their physical activity levels and promote their social skills as they play with other children.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress in nearly all areas of their learning and development. Children are very motivated and eager to learn. They enjoy attending and have fun as they play with their friends. They gain the required skills for their next stage in learning and their move to school. For example, children are independent and manage their personal needs well. They listen and concentrate carefully during activities.
