Inspection activities
The inspector spoke to children and the childminder at appropriate times during the inspection. The inspector observed the quality of teaching and the impact this had on children's learning. The inspector and the childminder evaluated the effectiveness of an activity together. The inspector took account of parents' views provided in writing on the day of the inspection. The inspector checked evidence of the suitability of the childminder, looked at a selection of children's records and safeguarding procedures, and discussed the childminder's self-evaluation process.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The childminder has a good understanding about her role and responsibility to keep children safe. She is confident about what to do if she has any concerns about a child's welfare. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder keeps her knowledge and skills up to date, for example, through regular training, including researching new information about changes in legislation. Since her last inspection, the childminder has made changes to her teaching practice. This has had a positive effect on children's communication and language development. The childminder keeps a close check on the progress that children make and reviews the quality of her setting regularly to guide improvement.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder provides children with a good range of activities that interest and motivate their play. She helps children develop good physical coordination, for example, by teaching children to thread pasta shapes together. The childminder supports children's language skills well. For example, she models new words, and extends children's vocabulary successfully. She teaches children about the textures of materials and encourages them to describe how they feel. The childminder regularly observes and assesses children's development and uses the information gained to successfully plan for their future learning. She shares children's progress with parents regularly, for example, through the use of diaries and daily conversations. Parents say that they enjoy the regular updates about their children's achievements and are kept fully informed about the progress that their children make.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder promotes children's positive behaviour well and is a good role model. She helps children to develop good relationships with her, and with each other. The childminder builds children's confidence and self-esteem well. For example, she praises their achievements, displays their artwork and shows that their ideas and views are valued. The childminder teaches children about the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. For instance, she provides daily opportunities to walk, play in the park, and attend local toddler groups, to gain fresh air and exercise.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children gain good skills that support their future learning and prepare them well for their eventual move to school. They have good opportunities to build on their interest in painting and being creative, and are learning how to use technology for a purpose. Children behave well and concentrate during activities. They listen carefully to instructions and follow these carefully, for example, when they take part in action songs.
