This provision is good
Children are very happy and settled and have good levels of confidence and strong self- esteem. The childminder supports children's communication and language, which helps to build their speaking and listening skills effectively. The childminder plans many interesting and exciting activities, inside and outside, to help stimulate and extend children's learning and development. The childminder and his co-minder have very good partnerships with parents, which helps to promote an effective and consistent approach to children's care, learning and development. Children's safety is of paramount importance to the childminder. He has a thorough knowledge of child protection issues and is fully aware and confident of the processes to follow if he has any concerns about a child. This helps to safeguard children's welfare and well-being.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder does not always contribute his knowledge of children's learning to strengthen further the shared approach to planning for children's next steps.

Inspection activities
The inspector observed the childminder playing and interacting with children during activities indoors and in the garden, and looked at the resources available. The inspector held discussions with the childminder at appropriate times. The inspector sampled a range of documentation including children's records, safeguarding procedures, and other policies and procedures relating to the setting. The inspector discussed the systems of observation, assessment and planning with the childminder, and how he works with parents. The inspector gained parents' views through the parental questionnaires.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder clearly understands and follows the policies and procedures of the setting to help ensure children remain safe and stay free from harm. The childminder works in a very good partnership with his co-minder, continually drawing on the experience and knowledge they have to support the good practice. He consistently helps families; for example, he offers a unique service where he picks up and drops off children from their home as and when required. The childminder identifies the needs of the children. For example, through the evaluation process he identifies his training needs and organises very exciting outdoor activities that support children with their learning about the world in which they live. This effective use of self-evaluation helps to continually improve outcomes for children.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder has a thorough understanding of how children learn through their play. He is very good at talking to children, skilfully enhancing their learning as they play at their chosen activities. For example, he reads books to the children to support them with their speech and language, and extends their learning by talking about the characters in the book to strengthen children's imagination. The childminder shares information with parents and uses the information to support analysis of children's progress.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder and his co-minder have very good relationships with children and their parents, which helps to support children's sense of belonging within the wider community and their well-being. The childminder encourages children's independence effectively, for example, the children put on their own sun hats when it is hot. Children are encouraged to share and take turns, for example, the children read books together and discuss the characters in a small group. The children are able to go on many exciting outings where they can explore, investigate and practice their physical skills; for example, they go to the beach and nearby woods. The childminder strongly encourages younger children to try new foods and involves them in the preparation of their snack, which helps to promote their skills for the future.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
All children make good progress in their learning from their starting points, and some make very good progress with their speech and language. All the children join in with the exciting activities, for example, they are taken to see newly born lambs and watch sheep being sheared at a local farm. Children release tadpoles back into the pond as they become frogs. This helps the children to gain a good understanding of how to care for nature. The children are prepared well for their next stage of learning.
