For example, they go to the library, local park or for walks in the environment to the river.  The childminder organises her home efficiently to ensure that the children can access the areas and resources safely.

p.1

Inspection activities

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of safeguarding procedures. She knows the appropriate action to take if she has any concerns about a child in her care. The childminder's robust policies and procedures are implemented well to ensure children are protected from harm. The childminder regularly reflects on and evaluates her practice to achieve ongoing improvements. She seeks the views of parents through questionnaires. This enables her to develop and improve her good practice further. The childminder keeps up to date with developments in childcare practices and attends training courses whenever possible to develop her own skills and to benefit the needs of the children. She regularly meets with other childminders to share good practice ideas. This has a positive impact on the learning experiences she offers children.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder gets to know the children in her care well. She regularly observes children in their play and takes photographs to evidence their learning. She makes accurate assessments of what they can do. The childminder uses this information to provide activities that are matched to children's learning needs and interests. The childminder supports children well in developing their language and communication skills. She skilfully responds to young children's vocalisations and babbles and models language as they play. She promotes children's confidence to communicate with others. The childminder gets down to the children's level and interacts purposefully to support their development. She uses every opportunity to extend children's learning by introducing numbers, colours and new words into their vocabulary as they play. The childminder also supports children who speak English as an additional language to use their home language in their play.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder works closely with parents to ensure settling-in procedures for children are effective. She finds out about children's interests and routines to promote consistency of care. This helps children to feel secure and at home in their environment. The childminder provides the children with constant praise and encouragement. This enables children to develop their self-esteem and confidence. Children have consistent boundaries and familiar routines. They enjoy healthy snacks and meals, in a relaxed and social atmosphere. The childminder helps children to gain an understanding of risk through everyday routines and outings. Children practise the emergency evacuation drill. They learn about road safety rules when out. Children learn about each others' similarities and differences, other cultures and ways of life outside of their own experiences.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children gain many skills needed for the next stage in their learning, such as nursery or school. They are becoming confident individuals who make independent choices in their play. Children learn to share and take turns. They use number names as they play and have many opportunities to develop their early writing skills. Children enjoy looking at books independently and with the childminder. All children make good progress given their starting points and capabilities.
