For example, she teaches children to be independent and choose their own resources. Children initiate their own play and are motivated learners. They behave well.  Children are keen to learn in a safe and welcoming environment where they are valued and respected. The childminder effectively supports the emotional development of children.  Children are confident and communicate well. The childminder praises children and builds on their self-esteem, helping them to develop good skills for the future.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always fully involve children in evaluating the quality of the provision to help make improvements to her practice and their experiences.  Although the childminder shares information with parents and, overall, works in partnership with them, she does not always support them with extending their children's learning at home.

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a clear understanding of the procedures to follow if she has concerns about children's welfare and her role in protecting them from harm. The childminder is vigilant about safety issues and ensures her home and garden are safe for children to use. The childminder has a very good knowledge of the children. She effectively tracks their progress, identifies areas where they need extra help and provides the support they need. Overall, the childminder reflects effectively on her practice, making improvements to provide good outcomes for children. For example, since the last inspection she has improved her planning, observations and assessments, to encourage children's learning even further.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder has a good variety of toys, equipment and resources that fully support children's learning. For example, children experiment and solve simple problems as they learn how toys with buttons and wind-up mechanisms work. The childminder supports children's communication and language development effectively using a good variety of strategies, including repeating words and extending their vocabulary. The childminder encourages children to think for themselves and extend their understanding, such as by asking challenging questions. Children have good opportunities to learn about diversity through a variety of activities and resources that help to explore differences.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder is a good role model, helping children to take turns and share. She teaches children about staying safe and being aware of possible dangers. For example, on outings, she teaches children about road safety. In the home, children learn about the risk of tripping over toys. Children develop warm and secure attachments to the childminder who helps them to feel confident and secure. Children develop their physical and social skills well through a wide range of interesting experiences. These include visits to the park and toddler groups where they use challenging equipment and mix with others. The childminder teaches children about being healthy and the importance of healthy foods, which they choose for their snack.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress from their starting points. They show good independence, competently putting on their shoes and coats. Children are tolerant and respectful of others, with good social skills. Young children count confidently while older children understand more complex mathematical ideas, such as 'more' and 'lots'.
