This provision is good

 Staff are kind and caring towards children and successfully support their emotional well-being. Children feel safe and secure in the staff's care and are growing in confidence.  Children make good progress. They are taught well and learn a wide range of skills using the indoor and superb outdoor environment. They are prepared effectively for the next stage in their learning.  Staff form very strong partnerships with parents. The setting is very much part of the local community and many parents return with younger siblings. Parents are extremely positive and full of praise for all the staff.  The staff team regularly evaluates the quality of provision and the activities it provides. Overall, staff identify appropriate areas for development.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The systems used to check children's progress do not fully identify gaps in children's learning.  Staff do not always organise activities effectively to develop children's listening and concentration skills.  Some of the committee members are unclear of their role in supporting the manager with the running of the setting.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 strengthen the routines to check children's progress, to help identify gaps in their learning  extend children's concentration and listening skills where possible to aid their learning  ensure committee members fully understand their role in supporting the management of the nursery.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspectors spent the majority of time observing the children in the nursery and garden.  The inspectors sampled children's information and developmental records.  The inspectors held discussions with the manager and staff.  The inspectors talked to parents to obtain their views about the nursery and read parents' comment forms.  The inspectors completed a joint observation with the manager.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The manager and staff have a good understanding of their responsibility to keep children safe. They are confident in the procedures to follow should they have concerns about a child's welfare. The manager is very experienced and well qualified. She observes staff practice and provides them with ongoing support through regular supervision. The staff team identifies a broad range of further training opportunities to help identify ways of improving. Suitable vetting procedures are used effectively, to ensure all staff, including committee members, are suitable to care for children and promote their welfare.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Staff have a good understanding of how children learn through play. They observe and assess children's learning and development regularly. This helps them to know children's interests well overall and to plan for their individual needs. Staff interact well with children as they play and actively discuss with children what they are doing. For example, children took part in a fruit tasting activity and were encouraged to describe the differences in texture, shape, smell and taste of various fruits. Staff provide good challenges for children to help them develop new skills. For example, they help children to use many creative resources, and provide scissors and tape dispensers for children to practise cutting and sticking to help develop their ability to use simple resources such as scissors.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are very excited as they arrive, and they settle quickly. Children behave well because they are busy and engrossed in activities. For example, they can choose to play outdoors during the day and they thoroughly enjoy the garden activities. The large garden is well resourced and children investigate and explore the natural environment with enthusiasm. For example, children show great wonder as they look at the bugs they find. Staff support their interest effectively, for example, by giving clues to the children about where the best spots are to find the bugs. Parents are kept very well informed about their children's development and are encouraged to share their children's experiences from home to extend their learning.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are motivated and enthusiastic to learn. All children, including those who have special educational needs or disability, make good progress, in relation to what they know when they start. For example, they form good relationships with others and show increasing independence. They are gaining secure early reading, writing and mathematical skills.
