Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Requires improvement Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 Children are not provided with opportunities to experience fresh air and exercise on a daily basis. Trips to the local park and green spaces are organised but these are not well planned to ensure that they occur daily.  Children's behaviour is not always handled in a positive manner as practitioners are inconsistent in their approach towards managing children's behaviour.  The quality of teaching is not consistent. Arrangements for performance management and supervision are not robust enough to help practitioners raise the quality of teaching to a higher level.  Practitioners do not always provide a stimulating environment for children attending the out-of-school club. Resources are limited and do not always capture the interests of older children.  Self-evaluation does not involve all parties. Children do not actively contribute to this process to ensure that the resources and activities are tailored to match their individual

p.1

It has the following strengths

 Younger children freely choose from an interesting range of resources and equipment which covers all seven areas of learning.  Children generally form close relationships with practitioners.  Parents are actively involved in their children's learning. Parents spoken to feel well informed about their child's day and have a good rapport with the practitioners caring for their children.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage and the Childcare Register the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

 plan effectively to ensure that children are provided with opportunities to experience outdoor play on a daily basis 31/05/2016

p.2

Due Date

 ensure children's behaviour is managed in an appropriate and consistent way 31/05/2016

p.2

Due Date

 ensure that systems for performance management are strengthened so that all practitioners receive coaching and training to help them promote the interests of children and raise the quality of teaching to a consistently high level. 31/05/2016

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 review the provision for older children attending the out-of-school club to ensure that they are provided with a stimulating and welcoming environment which captures their interests, engages and motivates them  involve all parties, including children, in the self-evaluation process so that it accurately identifies any weaknesses in the provision.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector completed a joint observation with the manager.  The inspector held a discussion with the manager. She looked at relevant documentation, such as the nursery's self-evaluation and evidence of the suitability of staff working in the nursery.  The inspector took account of parents' views through written comments and by speaking to a small number of parents.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

Arrangements for safeguarding are effective. Practitioners regularly update their safeguarding knowledge through appropriate training. Daily safety checks are carried out by practitioners to ensure the premises remain safe. The manager holds termly supervision meetings with each practitioner to review their training needs and working practices. However, this arrangement is not robust enough to ensure that all practitioners deliver teaching at the highest level. Management and practitioners evaluate the provision daily and involve parents in their self-evaluation process through regular questionnaires. However, at present, children have limited opportunities to contribute to this process. Older children are not able to play an active role in the planning of activities and resources.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

The quality of teaching is variable. Some practitioners deliver activities that are matched to individual children's learning needs effectively. However, not all practitioners demonstrate good knowledge of how to promote children's learning and extend their thinking. Younger children who attend the setting during the school day freely guide their play by accessing the interesting range of resources. They have fun participating in painting activities. Children enjoy imaginative play and make good use of the role play area and the dressing up clothes. However, older children who attend the setting after school have limited resources and activities provided for them. They freely choose resources from a small selection of equipment presented within the out-of-school club room. However, the range does not capture children's interests sufficiently.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

There are inconsistencies in the way in which some practitioners manage children's behaviour. The lack of a stimulating and exciting environment for older children, sometimes leads to them becoming disinterested and bored. This in turn can lead to children running around the large space available to them in the out-of-school club room. Some practitioners are not skilled at distracting children and channelling their energy into more productive play. Children are provided with some opportunities to play. The building has no outdoor provision, therefore, practitioners take children to the local park and make use of resources, such as the local library. However, planning for outdoor play and learning is not robust enough to ensure that children receive daily outdoor experiences. Children have some opportunities to learn about keeping healthy when they discuss foods that are good for them with practitioners.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Children develop some skills which prepare them for their next stage of learning, such as school. They speak proficiently and articulate their feelings well. Children count to 10 and above and know some letters of the alphabet. They are beginning to write recognisable letters and recognise their own name. Children have some opportunities to become independent, for example, they are encouraged to put their own coats and shoes on and to manage the fastenings.
