 The childminder has a secure understanding of the welfare requirements. She uses effective policies and procedures to help promote children's health, safety and security.  The childminder plans a broad range of activities, which she uses effectively to support children to make good progress in their learning.  Children use their imagination and express their creative ideas in a variety of ways. For example, they enjoy role play, singing, listening to music and playing instruments.  The childminder works well in partnership with parents. She encourages them to be more involved in their children's learning, which helps to develop a strong and successful link between home and the setting.  The childminder is committed to continuous improvements and has identified areas to target to benefit children's care and learning opportunities further.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not make the best use of all opportunities to increase children's understanding of similarities and differences between themselves and others.  Children do not always have enough opportunities to explore how simple equipment works to increase their understanding of the world around them.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

Arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder carries out regular risk assessments indoors and outdoors to minimise hazards and promote children's safety. She maintains all documentation for the safe and efficient management of the children effectively. The childminder has a secure understanding of child protection issues. She knows how to recognise when a child is at risk and the procedures to follow to support children's well-being. The childminder attends relevant training to keep up to date with changes in practice and to develop her skills, for example, in first aid and in observation and assessment. She has addressed the previous recommendations effectively, which has led to improvements to children's care and learning. Parents' written comments indicate that they are happy with the quality of care and learning their children receive.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder ensures that resources are easily accessible to children so that they can select and make choices about their play and learning. She regularly observes children and uses her notes to assess children's ongoing achievements. The childminder identifies children's stage of learning and plans what they need to learn next to extend their abilities. Children develop their language and communication skills well. For example, they enjoy sharing books with the childminder and their friends. They point to characters with interest and predict the ending to familiar stories. The childminder introduces simple mathematical concepts into children's play to develop their understanding and ideas.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are confident, happy and settle well in the childminder's care. They form secure attachments to the childminder, who is warm and responsive to their needs. She uses a daily diary and informal discussions with parents to ensure continuity of care. Children visit local play facilities on a regular basis and they are learning to make friends with others beyond the setting. The childminder uses praise, encouragement and simple rewards to promote positive behaviour. Children play in a clean environment and they learn to follow good hygiene procedures. The children receive a variety of nutritious meals and the childminder helps them understand foods that are good to eat. Children enjoy physical play, which extends their physical skills and promotes their good health.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children enjoy their time with the childminder. They show a positive attitude to learning and are developing new skills, including self-confidence and independence. They make good progress in their learning and development in readiness for when they go to school.
